i9300 7800go gtx upgrade problems

Hi everyone, I am feeling really desperate about the 7800go gtx problems with my i9300, and I would really appreciate any help! Thanks in advance.

I have used the 7800go gtx video card in my 9300 for 2 days, and so far the experience has been quite frustrating.

Wednesday night: I bought the 7800go gtx card from another person locally, and he also installed the video card for me. He followed the installation instructions from this website, and left after he installed the video drivers from Tweaksrus and got the resolution back to 1920 x 1200. After he left my place, I used my laptop with the usual applications, and I found the laptop to be much sluggish than before. When I tried to watch a movie in .rmvb format, there were often and obvious stuttering in the video playback. I was very disappointed as even 6800go vanilla (my original card) would play a simple movie smoothly, why would a much stronger card such as the 7800go gtx have any problems? Moreover, I rebooted my laptop multiple times and there were two times at bootup, an error said "no bootable device was found, press F1 to retry or F2 to go into setup". The other times it would boot up into Windows XP as normal. I left the laptop alone after getting so frustrated.

Thursday night: I tried using my laptop again, and the normal applications were still sluggish. I tried to watch some movie again in .rmvb again, and the stuttering video was unbearable. I then thought may be it was the video drivers' problem, and I uninstalled the tweaksrus video drivers the person installed for me. Then I installed the the mobile 7800/7900 drivers from Nvidia's website. It got even worse as the video playback stuttered every 3 seconds in a movie. Then when I tried to play Warcraft 3, the video also stuttered, which was very surprising as even 6800go vanilla would handle it smoothly in the past. I then tried a couple more drivers from Laptopvideo2go, and the sluggish performance was unbearable. I rebooted my machine for about 13 to 15 times and there were again two times showing the "no bootable device" error message at start up.

Some other things I noticed:

On some of the video drivers I installed, it showed the GPU temperature, and it was 70C when it was idle. Is that even normal? Seems too hot as people here said idling temp was around 40C to 50C.

Some questions that I have:

1. What is going on with the error "no bootable device"? I have never seen that before in the past 1 year and 9 months (since I have my i9300). I am sure it is related to this video card upgrade.
2. Do you have similar video stuttering issues when you are using the 7800go gtx card in i9300?
3. Do you think the card may have some overheating issues?
4. What video drivers am I supposed to use? Tweakrus has been down for a few days already. I am a very casual gamer so I pretty much just want movies to play smoothly and games running a little smoother and faster.
5. How is it possible that when go 7800 gtx supposed to be 2+ times stronger than go 6800 vanilla, would give such poor performance?

I am feeling so frustrated as I do not know if (1) the upgrade process is not done correctly, (2) the card is defective, (3) I am using the wrong drivers or it is a combination of (1), (2) and (3). I am also feeling so disappointed as I spent 300 USD to upgrade and right now my laptop is even worse than before.
Please help!

I would try like you said the Nvidia drivers and maybe even the Dell drivers. If none work, then Id say move to hardware.

Did the guy seem to know what he was doing or did he just seem like he was 'wingin it'??? I would hate to say you bought a bad vid card, but perhaps its not seated proprely or some cable/connector isnt connected all the way?

If this guy runs/owns like a comp shop from where u bought this card, Id try to re-contact him see whats up...

Maybe open up the laptop and run through the instructions again, make sure everything is where its supposed to be.

The video playback problems are not likely related to the video card. At least, they shouldn't be. The CPU takes care of encoding videos and playing them.

Here's my guess for your "no bootable devices found" problem. First of all, the XPS BIOS would have been installed for the 7800GTX to work. Now, if you have a SATA hard drive, the BIOS is having a conflict with it. The XPS's back then didn't come with SATA hard drives, so the BIOS isn't detecting it right away. To fix this problem go into your BIOS settings and setup the BIOS to do a thorough POST instead of a quick POST. It will take slightly longer to past the POST test on bootup, but the error should go away.

Tell me, do you have the 130W power adapter? Hopefully you're not still using the 90W, because if you are the clock speeds of the CPU and GPU would be dropped, causing poor system performance.

Thank you so much for your quick replies!

I do have a 130W adapter and I think the processor is running at full clock speed, as it is showing 2 Ghz under Control panel - system.

My i9300 does have a SATA drive, and I am going to do a thorough POST in BIOS, so hopefully it will take care of the "no bootable device found problem".

Once I fix the harddrive problem, I am going to install 84.69 drivers from DELL and see if it makes any difference.

Thanks again guys!

Sadly, I did a thorough POST in BIOS, and nothing changed. The "no internal boot device" error still appear once every few times.

And I also did a clean install of DELL's 86.94 drivers, and could not even watch a movie in .rmvb format smoothly.

This is very strange. Do you have experience with opening up your laptop and working on the parts inside? If so, I'd try reverting everything back to original. Original BIOS and video card. See if your problems go away.

Since your thorough POST didn't work, I don't know what else it could be. The video card wouldn't effect detection of the hard drive, only the fact that it's an XPS BIOS and you're using a SATA HDD. The thorough scan usually fixes this problem. Check your BIOS settings again just to be sure that the setting got saved.

If all else fails, or your not comfortable with opening up your laptop, take it up with the guy that installed it for you.

Did you update to the latest XPS gen2 bios? The cracked version is only version A02 and the newest for the gen2 was (I believe) A05; that could certainly help.
Also, I was able to run my 9300 with the 7800gtx using the newest 9300 bios, so you might want to try that as either of those could fix your bootable device problems.

Yea I think the BIOS trick is your best bet.

Try taking out the hardrive, blow some duster in the slot where it goes, and reseat it.
The guy that took apart your laptop might not have seated it all the way.

As for the 7800, run some GPU intensive apps and monitor temps while you are doing it. Your card may be throttling due to excessive heat.
If it is heat, then you have to break down the system almost completely to clean out the fans and heatsinks. And while you at it you might consider some Artic Silver 5 for your processor and video card....
