Looking for a gaming notebook...

Thread Starter
Hey, I'm heading off to college in a few weeks, and I need to buy a notebook. I don't really know where to start to look for reviews and stuff. I have built my own PC before, though.
I would like to know if you guys have any recommendations.

I am looking for a notebook that is not too expensive, preferably ~$1500, that could run games fairly smoothly and has a screen size thats not too small. I'm a big fan of gaming, and I play games like cod2 (preferably be able to get constant 125fps on dx7), css, and wow, and wc3.

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest sticking w/ a 15.4" screen. If you don't need DX10 support right now then look at last gen ASUS notebooks (Z96J, S96J both w/ x1600 GPU's that should do what you need)

If you want DX10 now look at the new Dell 1520's and be sure to have the 8600gt GPU that will also do what you need.

If you aren't concerned about size too much look in the Dell outlet for a used 1705 w/ a 7900gs GPU, this will definitely play your games.

Or look for an M90 in the workstation outlet of Dell, be sure to grab one w/ the 512mb of VRAM (it is a good gaming card even though it is meant for CAD applications)

don;t mean to hijack this thread - but also looking for a new gaming laptop although budget is open ended. was going to spend $3000-4000 on a desktop (custom build) but thinking i would go with a high spec laptop. I want to be able to play the up coming FPS games being released like Haze, Cryisis etc in as good a quality as possible. I see you have 3 main choices, Alienware, Sager or Dell. Last time I looked Dell had the lead with power / gpu combo etc. Which is the current speed king? Would like SLI if possible, don;t care about the weight etc. This is a desktop replacement.
I have my macbook for traveling.

Right now it is the Alienware m9750, has C2D and SLI 7950gtx GPU's

The Dell 1730 will be out sometime soon (don't know for sure when) and it is similar to the m9750

You may want to wait until you can get some 8700gt's in SLI so you can run the new games in DX10 mode.

If you get a gaming notebook now w/ a DX9 card in it you'll have to upgrade too soon IMO.

I think a 15.4 w/ x1600 is perfect
