Asus G1S is slow

I have a brand new ASUS G1S notebook (purchased for my son) and I don't have to quote specs to this group I'm sure but there is no way I'd ever expect it to be slow. However, my 4 year old XP desktop is more responsive??

I've considered the bloatware and removed most of it but it is still slow does anyone have any suggestions for getting the performance I paid for out of this notebook.

may be re install the OS, run some hardware diagnostic tests (ASUS my provide some but IDK for sure)

When you say it is slow what do you mean. (slow in games? if so what games? slow on boot to desktop? if so how long does it take? slow opening applications? if so what apps? etc.)

I just mean generally and noticeably non-responsive. Very much like an old Windows install on an old computer and entirely unlike what a new fast dual core gaming notebook should be.

I'd check processess and startup programs next. Also, if you've got an older version of NortonAV or have Mcafee, you might want to consider a freebie like AVG or Avast, or pay for Kaspersky or NOD.

This may be the first post I've read about an Asus with this sort of problem. Good luck.

Well, I've been researching this for about a full day and I have replaced Norton pre-install with AVG already but here is the big finding. CPUZ is reporting the processor running at ~1100 MHZ which doesn't sound right at all for a 2.2 GHZ processor. The bus speed is ~196 MHZ and the FSB is ~780 MHZ.

I know there is such a thing as CPU scaling on notebooks but I am using the High performance profile and I even modified it so that it only should ever run at 100% using this profile.

If you're playing a game, does it feel sluggish, or is it only during "normal" Windows usage?

My own machine is a Mac and I've never noticed this (of course, I've never attempted to check on it, either), but I've read about something called "Speedstep" which slows down Intel processors until more oomph is needed. It conserves battery power and helps keep a machine cool. I think there's a power setting you can change to "always on" which will fix your problem, but I don't know where to find it - sorry.

Hmmm.. head over to the Notebook Review forums and search for "G1S BIOS issue". There's a known issue where, as I recall, after the unit has been on battery power and is plugged back in, the CPU won't go to back to the original frequency, and it has to be restarted to go back to the original frequency. The problem is a bug in the BIOS. It should be fixed in the next BIOS revision.
