First laptop

I'm going off to college in exactly two weeks and want a pretty good gaming laptop. I don't need anything mindblowing since I wish to play a few new games that are going to come out. It's going to be my first laptop and don't want to spend over $1,600. Any help would be appreciated.

From doing a quick search of Newegg with your price range in mind and the fact that you want a gaming rig. I would suggest:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834147484
It's got a dual core processor, 2gb of ram, 200gb hard drive, and the best dedicated video card in your price range. Also it's an HP and not one of the the "value/cheap" brands. For gaming you'll definitely want to pick up a copy of Windows XP. It comes with Vista (read: system resource hog).

Going the Newegg way as brouiller did, but with a more stringent graphics card requirement (the notebook he suggested has an 8400m GS graphic card, which is not very suitable for playing many brand new games). Check out the Asus F3SV-A1 with an 8600 GS graphic card instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834220181

edit: the one soulsaver linked to is even better

Thanks a lot for the replies guys. What about some of the other ones I found?

http://www.costco.com/CTO/HPConfigur...&model=GM816AV

And upgrade it to 1.8GHz, 2 GB DDR2, 383MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS, 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery, HP Nylon Value Carrying Case, System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit), 3-yr Extended Service Plan with HP Express Repair.
And I get a mouse with it.

All of that should come out to $1,369.99

IS that good?

the 8400 is a very poor performing card... i would not buy a machine with it especially for the kind of money they are wanting...

it's fine except when you get to "a few new games that are going to come out." Any time you're talking future games, you need a performance-level video card or better. Look for a notebook with an Nvidia GeForce 8600M, preferably with the GT version.

Get a Dell Inspiron 1520 or Vostro 1500 (from small business). Configure it yourself with a 8600GT, the best card period in your price range, and you should fall well under 1500 with a decent coupon. Also, if you buy the vostro, you can choose XP and bypass all the vista hassle.

the one i linked can be configured for less, and is much better build quality than dells trash, even with the paint job dell offers :P

What about a warranty? What kind should I get if I order a custom built laptop from xotic? What about from Dell?
notebook computers are one of the few products that are really worth warranting for as long as possible. Get the longest warranty you can afford -it's worth it not to have to pay for your $400 screen or $350 motherboard if they die on you.

i believe they offer the same thing as dell, over night shipping on parts, and at home care no one that comes to your house to fix yer dell, is an employee of dells, its just a 3rd party company that is a huge IT company that sells time blocks to these people, dell, hp, even xoticpc EDIT: yeah 3 year parts and labor, comes with 2 year labor, 1 year parts warranty as a standard id get it d00d, its a cheap model for what it has in it, CLevo makes a lot of laptops, they may even make dell's for them soulsaver

Soulsaver, thanks a lot for that. What about this? I can get it right away instead of waiting for shipping.
