USB Locations

Thread Starter
I'm not a huge fan of the placement of some of my USB ports or the clutter of wires that they create on my desk. I'm looking into buying a 4 port usb hub/extender device of some kind that would locate all of my ports into one convenient location. I'm not too familiar with how power is divided amongst USB ports though so I'm afraid if I hook up four things to one port I may not get the functionality I'm hoping for, even if I don't use the other three ports at all. Can anyone shed some light on this for me, and even maybe recommend a product?

A good USB hub comes with a power adaptor to provide it's own power for the USB ports.

As you surmized there is a limitation on the available power to each usb port, and if you exceed that and damage the port your looking at a new motherboard most likely.

I think you get a maximum of about two watts from a usb port, so definitely don't plug any chargers into a hub. Mice, keyboards, etc. should be fine though.

I use a trusty Targus 7-port hub. Comes with it's own power supply, but can also run off just USB power if all your devices are low/self-powered.
