Wait for Leopard?

Hey guys, i am in the market for a new notebook. i am looking at macbooks and i was wondering if i should wait for leopard to come out (october?) and possibly new macbook models as in with LEDs. my student discount will always be there, but should i just get one now or wait. it isnt really a dire need but it would be more convenient. i have a xp disc and really dont plan on getting vista ( i used 95 until 2002 lol), now back to mac, is leopard going to be that much of a step forward? is apple going to increase the power of their macbooks for leopards release?

thanks in advance

If you don't need to get a computer now I would wait a bit.

pure speculation, but when Leopard is released I wouldn't be surprised to see the MacBooks upgraded. This could include the noted LED screens and I'd be highly surprised if it didn't result in in the GPU at the very least being upped to intel's GMA 3000 series. The latter would obviously be done to address any possible new overhead required to handle the new eye candy in Leopard.

Also pure speculation. . .

I wouldn't be surprise in the least if leopard got delayed, again.

Whyfor?
I personally don't think Leopard would be delayed further. I've just tested out the 9A499 build, it is A LOT better then the WWDC release. So far, their progress is progressing pretty quickly fixing problems, errors, etc.

Well, thus far, Leopard has been running pretty well on my MacBook Core Duo system, definitely not noticeably slower than Tiger at least.

As I mentioned it is pure speculation, and who knows they could surprise me. Kakarot's report above for instance is a step in the right direction, but what sticks out in my mind is how not ready the WWDC version was, which when dealing with something that is your OS will typically take a good while to get stable enough for what I would personally consider a release ready version.

Add on to that that delaying it a few more months gives it a very news central event in January, means there will be less reason not to if a question on whether it is ready or not comes up.

As I said, pure speculation, I have just decided to not hold my breath for it any longer myself.

I am in the same boat as you 2+2=4. I am going to need a new laptop before January for school, so I have decided on the macbook - but I am definitely waiting on leopard. the next problem for me is all the speculation about an upgraded macbook. OS's can be upgraded, but I would hate to purchase the current macbook when a new one is coming...

man, my lappy hd just died on me, and i just love hp tech support so i am on the edge of my seat now for leopard to come out. i am leaning towards not getting an hp again but a bud has a 12' tablet from hp and it looks very tempting, oh the classic debate mac or pc
post #11 of 41
MAC

unless you have lots of windows apps that you can't live without, mac has almost everything you'll need, plus you can dual boot.
if its a tablet you want, you'll have to go pc b/c apple doesnt make em

I got a mac because I wanted to get away from windows and their crappy OS. Granted, the programs for windows aren't bad at all, its just the OS which makes it hard to work with. Right now, I can't even get windows update to work properly on a newly install windows XP. it just runs up errors or gets stuck on "searching for updates" for 1 hour.

I got my MacBook for software development purposes, that way I could run anything that might come up. Plus it was magically cheaper than anything else in its class.

Really loving OS X, but I think that either Leopard has some optimization work to do since I have significantly less battery life under Leopard than I did under Tiger, and it seems to be a bit RAM hungrier than Tiger.

well i suppose i will just have to wait until october (fingers crossed) for leopard. i hope apple does upgrade its hardware for leopard, i want to see LED in macbooks as well as more color options, im just hopeful like that lol. i want a green macbook!!!!
oh and is having a LED display opposed to LCD help battery life that much?
LED displays are LCDs. The LED part is the backlight in place of the florescent light in non LED LCDs. And yes, they are much more energy efficient.

Do you think Leopard is worth up grading to with a1.67 GHz PowerPC processor?
Since a lot of the indie Mac devs have stated that the next versions of their software will be Leopard only, it might be a necessity if you rely on a lot of small applications.

Otherwise, it has yet to be seen whether or not Leopard will work well on a G4 Mac. The WWDC version was horrible and slow but improvements are constantly being made and OS X has a history of being pretty damn good on older hardware.

I was told by an Apple sales rep that if you purchase a Mac of any kind and within 90 days of you doing so they release a major upgrade of the OS that you will receive a free upgrade to said new OS...

That is awesome, but I would have to see it in writing somewhere before I believed it...

I've never heard of them doing it in 90 days.

14 days is the most I've ever heard of them doing it. That's what happened when Tiger was released.
