Need advice regarding gaming laptop

Thread Starter
A few years back I bought an i9300 that I've used up until this day, and I am really satisfied with how Dell has handled problems and orders. Therefore, when its time to get an upgrade I will (of course) return to Dell.

This is my problem though. I know what I want. But I don't know what will suit my needs.

What I want is a laptop that has the only function of gaming. I won't use it for office-related things, and I won't use it to compile programs or render advanced 3ds max stuff, nor am I a movie-maker of any kind. The laptop will only be used to play games - and the more powerful it is, the better. Screen should be at least 17''.

However, I have NO idea what laptop this is. And I am having extreme troubles in finding benchmarks and whatnot between GPUs, not to mention complete setups.

Therefore, if anyone has any links to such websites, or names of the magazines they are in, I would greatly appreciate if you could link it to me, so I can really read up on "what's hot". Note that I am not looking to spend as much money as possible - while money is not an issue, I don't want too large diminishing returns on the value of it.

Also, if anyone has been in this particular spot before (I have no doubt you have), I would greatly appreciate your own input and suggestions.

Yours Sincerely,
Damaged4Life

Dell Inspiron 1720?
1720 pfffftttttt don't even bother.
If you want to get a gaming laptop from dell you either need to wait until they finally release a good video card for the newer XPS line (8700 or if there is a good god a SLI setup of 8700) or buy a "last gen" M1710 with a 7950GTX and a T7600G OC'ing processor.
At this time, the best gaming vid card for laptops is the 7950GTX.

If you want an even more powerful non-Dell system.. then you need to look into the SLI setups with dual 7950GTX's like Sager's etc..

Your current options assuming budget allows for it would be the

Dell XPS M1710
Dell Precision M90

Both come with a variant of the Geforce 7950GTX go 512MB card and enjoys awesome performance. However both systems will be replaced rumor has it in the next month with SantaRosa versions of the systems

Dell XPS M1730
Dell Precision M6300

just overclock the 8600m gt, thats all a 8700 is, check out some of those wegpages on google that show all the laptop gpu in comparison.

if you want the notebook to last a couple of years your only real choice is to wait for the M1730 and get two 8700gt's running in SLI then upgrade then in a year. (this is only if you plan on playing the upcoming DX10 games) if you only play CS:S and don't plan on playing any other games then the m1710 would prob be your best choice.

People will say the 8700 sucks and it may not be that great, IDK but I do know it is the best DX10 mobile card as of right now and if you want to play DX10 games then that is what you'll want.

I very much do, thanks for the advice so far. I guess I'll hang around for a while, I don't mind waiting for a new model - but I guess there's always one more, eh? =)

I got the black edition XPS M1710 last March, and I love it. It's played EVERY game I've bought on the highest settings and runs awesome. I love this machine and wouldnt trade it for any other laptop.

Stats are on my signature.

Wait up for the XPS 1730. The dual 8700GT's will power through games most likely even games as high end as Crysis
