Hey just wondering when you guys speculate the new line of XPS laptops will come out? I'm anxious to see if they'll have an upgrade to the 2010.

rumor mill says the end of this month for the successor to the 1710. I've not seen anything about a replacement for the 2010.

Not Looking forward for the new line at all anticipation for this new thing is no where close to the M1710's release date nearly a year ago.

It's pointless to release new m1710 when there is no 8800 gtx go.
8700 gt is not even an upgrade against 7950 gtx. So i am not excited about new m1710 until 8800 gtx is available.

The M1730 is not just a rumor, it is OFFICIAL that its coming out at the end of this month. It says so in my service manuals. And again, the problem is Dell wants a 17" XPS to match their latest Inspirons, but nVidia has screwed up and has no mobile 8800 in a reasonable amount of time. The fault lies squarely with the GPU makers this time around.

So the choice people have to make is 7950GTX single card or Dual 8700GT
post #7 of 20
Is dual 8700 gt available for m1730?
haven't heard of that.

If I were dell, I would hold off until 8800. There is no point.

I wouldn't mind initial SLI XPS system over M1710 if price were about the same.

The 8800M should be out sometime in September as I understand it. We have to wait for the 65nm parts.

They should've revamped the 2010 series with the 8700 instead of sticking it into the m1730. Those cards will work fine in a multimedia 1st, gaming 2nd laptop but not in a gaming first one like the 17xx series. Only way the 8700 in a 1730 will be acceptable to me is if it's in SLI (and at least affordable in that config), or Dell promises that you can swap out for a later GPU. I hope Nvidia is working hard on a high end mobile GPU and not slacking off just because ATI's pretty much out of the race.

think later than that.... much later....

if nvidia was going to be that fast with getting one out then dell would delay to ensure their latest machine wasnt outdated right out of the gate. but since dell is pushing ahead with a 1730 release for the end of august or beginning of september we can be pretty sure that nvidia is not gonna get one out all that fast.

yes this one does lay squarely at the feet of nvidia and the otehr GPU makers for not having anything that would work with the mobile market for the true gamers.

Now, I really hope ATI/AMD can step up and offer something in the high end to stay in the race.
Focus on low end does make the money for now, but soon or later, no one will buy ATI when they all think nvidia is always better.

Without ATI, we will stuck with 7950 for few years.
I'll take my Dual 7950 anyday over these 8600, 8700's. Show me an 8800. If it becomes very clear an apparent that I need DX 10 for these new DX 10 games (which haven't even taken off yet) I'll move up, but I'm not going to invest into something that's unclear atm.

Wouldnt this be a valid arguement.

The hardcore gaming line is such a small piece of the market that Nvidia/Ati are dragging their feet becasue they figure 'such a small percentage of people are gona use this high end card (8800), is it really worth all the manpower/money investments when only a small portion of ppl will benefit?'

So i guess it just vomes down to money?
Maybe... but consider the premiums paid for this "Enthusiast" technology. Even if they sell one-fifth as many XPS systems than Inspiron's, the profits made are greater for the gaming systems... Why? Cause you gotta pay to play and gamers will splurge big cash for high-end gaming graphics.
You could make the same argument about the 9800 due to come out at the end of this year. Whose really going to buy those cards right now? Extreme enthusiasts no differnt from an Extreme laptop user, like myself.
dual 8700s wouldnt be horrible but not great either the problem lies with the fact that not all games take full advantage of SLI so when it comes time to have to just use one card at 1920x1200 its not going to be pretty . even with that new extreme core2duo thats supposedly in the works for the 1730 it will not help that crappy gpu enough to push those kind of resolutions .
High end is like 2 % of the market. Not 1/3.
First of all I said 1/5, and that was just a hypothetical number thrown out there for comparison sake. The fact is, even with them moving less quantity of an XPS notebook, they are making many times the profit on each sale compared to the inspiron line. I bet Dell doesn't pay much of a difference between the 7900GS/7900GTX/7950GTX cards. Yet you could have easily spent nearly 1000-2000 more dollars on
an XPS notebook that is almost identical in configuration to an E1705. What do you get? Flashing lights and a colorful lid. I am willing to bet Dell doesn't break the bank with the design of the M1710...

These high end gaming systems are killer profit machines for Dell and they know it. So as stated, if they sell only 2% as many XPS's as Inspirons, the profits are still more like 1000%.

What about the 2010? What kinds of upgrades do you forsee for the 20" XPS model?
