distros... - Page 2

Thread Starter
its the same install i had at the beginning, kubuntu. the only only worries about the isos is that i dont want to loose the data with a reformat.

i tried the ctrl-alt-f1 (terminal log in) and can log into the terminal just fine. cant seem to log into root though... either way, it acts normally when i log into the system via KDE, just it dosent bring me to the splash screen. instead it loops me back to the log in...

is there anyway i can bring up KDE from terminal?

Sounds like there is a problem either in your KDE or X11 config, most likely KDE config to be honest.

What you might want to try doing(And maybe someone here more familiar with Ubuntu than me can help you with) is uninstalling and reinstalling KDE, and see if that fixes it. You will need to make sure you remove all config files if you do this(Making backups is a good idea)

Same Problem I had try this and reconfigure xorg.conf: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Rob the above aloud me to manual set the Rez to what ever I wanted.

that's interesting- I've tried that and although I can see a lot of resolution options, I can't change the (wrong) one it's using. I have to manually include the correct resolution in the file (in my case adding 1680x1050 in front of the other resolution listings in etc/X11/xorg.conf) for my notebook to be at the proper resolution.

same for me. But it did not let me change which ones that were selected, so it did me no good

it's on my list as well. but the bolded section of your response is what I cannot do. I CAN'T just "set it", as it doesn't allow me to "set" or "unset" any of the resolutions listed

Really? Try running it in recovery mode and see if it will let you change it.

as I recall, I've tried that and it didn't, but I'm not absolutely sure. however, since it's been working fine since I typed the correct resolution into the file, I don't have a desire to mess it up so I have to do it again.

I'm using 4 gdesklets: a clock and a 3 monitors (CPU speed/frequency, memory, & network activity) from a package called "gauges"

I've also got a small CPU temp monitor in my taskbar

Space bar allows you to select and deselect resolutions in that utility.

One of my machines has an ATI card, so I had to manually set the resolution to 1920x1200. Really wasn't so bad this time having done it previously with both Ubuntu and Sabayon. With Sabayon, I kept wondering why, though I was following the instruction precisely, the damn resolution wouldn't go to 1920x1600. After asking for help, Louis noticed (and pointed out politely) that I was an idiot and got me on the correct track.

I'm sure it should, but it doesn't, at least on my machine

Heh personally my way of doing it is how Djembe did it, and that is one of the greatest things about Linux.

Edit a text file and you are done. If the config utility doesn't work there is always more than one way to do it

the best way to fix resolution issues is to edit xorg.conf.. thats the way i do it to set 1280x800 if a distro defaults to 1024x768...so much blur!
Imagine the blur of 1024x768 on a 1680x1050 screen.....

Why is the text stretched off the widgets?
