9880 going black screen edition and only working on external screen !

Hello notebook forum geniuses...
I have a problem in my beautiful 9880 that i failed to solve

When i first bought the 9880 the graphic card was messed up and sager shipped me a new one and everything worked fine on the 9880 until its adapter started falling apart and died. I had to ship a new one outside the states from sager website.

The laptop screen used to go black at first while playing games and then i would slap the graphic card area and it would come back again but this doesnt work anymore.
It works OK on extrernal screen but that didnt solve everythin.

Symptoms:

1) Mobilmeter temperature reader shows no temp of the pc only shows HDD temp i guess.(using external screen of course)

** EDIT 1** ----> Mobilmetre working fine after checking all cables again and loose screws.

2) Playing games on it (low or max settings) causes it to shut down after a maybe 30 min of playing, This is the most thing that annoys me.

3) I can use it for a long time of normal use like websurfing, chating..etc but it occasionaly shuts down with no previuos warning and no blue screen.

4) Fans have a problem turning up even at automatical or contineus configuration from bios. Id have to press fn+f2 most times to make fans spin. Heat sensors r missed up and i think this causes the sudden shutdown.

**EDIT 1** ----> Fans working gr8 after opening the case and checking cables and cleaning.

5) When turning up the laptop sreen shows the upper 3/4 black and abt lower 1/4 fading green and other colors (back light working) but it isnt like artifacting this is different .Screen seems to be like working on low hertz. I can see slow refreshing of black color occuring.

5) No weird noises.

6) DVD,card reader,sound, keyboard,touchpad,front time,
fans(fn+f2),wireless+bluetooth,HDD (60gb) and all other stuff are all working properly.

What i had done till now:

1) The computer is clean (from inside to outside) no dust closing fans or gpu.

2) Tried With and Without Battery it but it didnt make a difference.

3) Reseated the lcd cables and fan calbles.

4) Hooked up external 17" lcd. It is acceptable but as i said i cant get Temp. readings and sudden shutdowns can occur.

5) Reseated the graphics card and found that one of the its 4 screws is not longer attached to the motherboard coz its anchoring piece went off with the screw (thot this might be a cause for wt is happening but i pushed the card from that particular screw area and the other 3 areas while turning the laptop on and it was the same). Hitting the graphics card area used to bring up the screen wen it went black.

6) Tried numerous nvidia ultra Drivers and put back originals.nth again.

7) Reseated CMOS battery. Also restored BIOS defaults.nth

8) THEN i give it to a repair centre here hoping they'll have an idea how to fix this brand that no1 knws here.Nth is even similar to the sager so it stayed 3 weeks and 2dy i got that they couldnt figure out the problem.[/color]
I know this is a long thread but it has been chanlenging, i dnt knw who will figure it out it might be one of u ppl. Im moving soon so ill try to fix the 9880 there.

What could it be ??
The new power adapter, graphic card, motherboard, fried electric regulateros that others on this forum discussed,or maybe a driver from laptodriver2go.com 100 series could have caused it ...

If i missed to post smth here tell me, ill be checking this thread on daily basis around the clock, lol !

Thank you for participating , We might accomplish smth that helps many others.

Disconnect all external cables and give it a good shake test. If that screw or spring is floating around loose inside, it could be shorting things out and causing all kinds of problems.

Thanx. i opened up the case and checked every tiny thing. Now the fans and mobilmeter are fine.

IT SEEMS EVERYTHING IS WORKING NORMAL NOW EXCEPT, THE ONLY PROBLEM NOW IS THIS:

screen is black but with backlight working.its just like the screen recieves no info on what to show, thought i checked its cable many times.

That extra "loose screw" on the graphics card seems suspect to me. You might want to separate the screw from the loose standoff (what the screw sinks into), and see if a local electronics shop can resolder it back to the motherboard. The purpose of the screws is to ensure a solid, aligned connection on the graphics connectors. From what I can see, it looks like there's enough space for an experienced soldering hand to get in there and make this kind of repair.

Other things to try...

Recheck the LCD cable on both ends -- yes, crack open the LCD bezel to access the LCD panel if you must. It's not clear from your message that you did both ends, so I'm assuming you only checked the Motherboard end.

Check for any cut, pinched, or loosened wires that don't appear to be aligned with the other wires at the cable ends. Clean and firmly reseat both ends.

Heck, you might want to just buy a spare LCD cable off of Ebay to be sure.

Next steps would involve swapping more costly components like the graphics card, motherboard, or LCD panel. Last resort would be to reflow the solder holding the LCD connector on the motherboard... which I don't recommend doing unless you've got access to expensive soldering equipment.

The fact that you can't get temperature readings suggests a faulty motherboard.

Thank you for the reply Cosmic Gecko.

I will get that screw fixed soon. In the back of the screen there is a sensitive white tape that i shouldnt touch. Is it a big risk to open the screen all the way? the screen cable is removable ? i mean i could jst buy one from ebay or is it hooked to the back of the screen permenantly ?

As for the temp reading and any other problems are fixed except that screen issue.

Nope the cables are well fitted. Could it be that the lcd cable is jst not working anymore ? by its own without any reason ..hmm

It sounds like a dieing motherboard to me. And considering the model that just makes it more likely.

Dame it!

I have the same problem with my sager i have cleaned everything and it did not help, but it does turn on after i press the power button on and off like 10 times until it worked and i thought it might have been the OS so i formatted and it was done right and it worked until i shut down then i had the same problem again and again. did you get any new info on this problem?

the cpu heat sensor is shot in mine. it will read 1 celclius for the cpu and this causes the fans to not even turn on so i am forced to run the laptop using fn+f2 full fan speed iption or else the cpu overheats and she shuts down. it just recently started to shut off or reboot by itself randomly as well just sitting idle. motherboard is dying.

this occured right after the motherboard fried one of the resisters on the board. it will not keep the battery charged either. damn these defective laptops. clevo got it so wrong with these. such a shame as they had the best chasis in the industry (and still do). now the new D900 models have much less connectivity in favor for sli. they are a step backwards when it comes to true DTR status, especially with only 1 optical drive. the original D900 that we have was the best on paper. too bad they did not live up to the hype (not upgradable without motherboard revisions and an overal defective design).

now i am forced to make the decision of spending $418 for another D900T motherboard (refurbished most likely as clevo stopped making them) and taking another chance at a defective motherboard or spend another $3k for the new D900 that has less connectivity ports. it has been a bad year for laptops in my mind.

oh well, rant off.

Motherboard is officially dead and it took the life of my new ac adapter as well !
