Non-Start on ZE2000

I have a almost 2 year old HP ZE2000 that does not power on anymore. I have replaced the power cord and the dc jack inside the laptop itself. My questions are do you have to have a battery in the laptop to turn it on via ac power or does a bad a battery that wont charge prevent the laptop from powering on? Thanks!

You should be able to power up the laptop w/o a battery installed. Do you get any power indicators (AC on) on the laptop with the AC cord plugged in? Most laptops have some sort of indicator. Otherwise it is possible you could be a bad power supply. You can test these with a simple volt meter between the inner conductor and outter conductor on the DC plug of the power supply. you should read within a few tenths of a volt of the stated output voltage that is on the power supply label.
