Asus A8js video and lcd upgrade?

Thread Starter
Hi all,

Do you all think that it will be possible to upgrade the A8js to the DX10 cards in the future? How about replacing the crappy lcds on these systems. I know that there are 2 types of lcds but in my opinion they are the bad and the worse. I am really thinking about selling this laptop just over th screen issues. We have a Sony and Dell laptop as well and their lcds are amazingly better. Do you all think it would be possible to drop in a different widescreen 14 inch lcd that isnt from Asus?

Thanks for the help,

Grey

you can change the LCD out for a different one, as long as the new one has the same type of connector, physical dimensions, and power requirements as the one you have now.

however, on the video card, you're out of luck. I'm fairly sure you'd need a new computer to have a DirectX 10 vid card.

i emailed the guys at portableone two months ago and they told me i can upgrade mine to the 8600 series for around $250. don't know exactly which card though. i'm guessing the GS, but i'm sure you could find out if you asked a distributor.

I'm not sure how that would be possible. It's my understanding that the position of the video card and heatsink on that model is inverted from MXM standards and thus not upgradeable.

well, they informed me it's possible and they know their stuff. i thought to ask them about it when i noticed they advertised the A8J as having "a user upgradeable video graphics card." http://laptopsinc.com/Merchant2/merc...gory_Code=P1MX

well, this is where I got my info from:

scroll down a little under where it says Asus in bold, and you'll see:

And it continues.. We recently purchased a 7600 of A8 origin we know it is based on a MXM connector and we know it is "flipped". We know for sure it will not just "fit", but we have some plans that fall under the 'do not try this at home' file system,so stay tuned!
maybe they came up with one of the "don't try this at home" solutions that MXM Upgrade mentioned??

hmm maybe. i don't think i'll give it a shot though, doesn't seem like the 8600 is much of a jump and i don't plan on gettin vista for a while.
