Questions about Apples Warranty

I have a Macbook Pro and love the thing. Been a windows user all my life and this is my first apple product.

I have been reading on the website about the warranty and I am still a little confused about the terms. I have the standard 90 Day phone/1 yr parts warranty.

Is the palm rest metal or plastic? It looks like paint has come up from the surface of the palm rest. I would consider this sort of a material failure since I mostly use the laptop with an external keyboard. I try to baby my new computers and I use a radtech cover when its closed.

So if I were to try and have that replaced, its still under the 1 yr hardware warranty. So can I call this in over the phone? Or do I have to do e-mail? A local store isn't an option since I live in the middle of nowhere.

I do love my MacBook Pro and I know this is just a physical thing.

Also my computer seems to be crashing as its shutting down. The blue screen with the busy indicator. It gets to that screen then freezes until I push and hold the power button. And for the life of me I can't figure out what I did to make that happen. So if I need to reinstall the OS, how do I do that?

Sorry for being such a mactard but like I said I was windows before this. I could reformat and reinstall windows in my sleep in 1 hr flat ready to go. Hell almost needed to do it every other month with windows. But not sure about a mac.

The palmrest can be replaced under the AppleCare Warranty, my sister got hers replaced free of charge when she took it into the Apple Store.

Reinstalling the OS is pretty easy. Drop the disc in that came with your computer, restart it, and then hold 'C' after you turn it back on. This will force it to boot to the CD, then you can tell it exactly what you want to install.

Ok so is this something I can do over the phone, to setup an mailin type service or do I need to go to a store?

Also - If my mac is all standard hardware from apple all the drivers needed are on the OS disk?

Again sorry for the nubness, still learning.

All the drivers are on the disk yes. However, you may not have the latest version of OS X on the disc. I know that on mine, the version is 10.4.6, however if you just got the machine then it probably will be 10.4.10.

Just go ahead and call Apple, they will probably cover shipping both ways, but make sure you back up your data before you send in the machine since they will no doubt wipe the drive.

Thanks for the replies but after some thought I have decided to just live with a few paint chips. I have had a horrible experience with mailing in Dell laptops and I don't want to risk this laptop. It works fine, just some cosmetic damage.
