how to install OS without cd-rom?

I am having video problems, and I think it may be that OS files are getting corrupted on the way from my cd-rom to the HD. I need a way around this and I don't know how. I have no norton ghost image to use or anything like that.

here's the story:
I have a clevo d470k (aka sager 4750), and I tried windows vista rc2 way back when. since then I am unable to run my laptop for very long without getting a blue screen saying my video card is bad. The fact this happened EXACTLY once I loaded a new OS suggests to me that it isn't really a problem with the video card, but something that happened when loading the OS. I've gone back to XP sp2 and the same problem happened. It can't get through 30 seconds of 3dMark. when installing windows it would get part way through and then hang at various stages.
I tried a version of linux that checks the cd for integrity before it starts loading, and sure enough it says it is corrupted and cannot continue.

back when I had xp sp2 working just fine, I was unable to burn cd-rs, but could burn dvd+/-r's most of the time, though they almost always had artifacts and hang ups when playing them back, and data dvds would almost never work. I had another cd-rom before this one but as I recall it had the same issue with reading and burning cds, so I don't think it's the burner itself, but either the cable or something on the MOBO. I've tried burning the OS disc on my other computer with no differing result.

it would cost me 500 bucks to replace the video card as it is integrated into the motherboard. heck I could buy something brand new for that much that would be a better computer then this beast. I'm not sure I would want to pay all the shipping and repair fees just to find out if it is indeed the video or not...

I have no money, but I am sick of this 1999 dell I'm using. It has integrated video so I can't edit video or do too much with audio software.
Please help!

alternate question: If I'm screwed and there is no way to fix this, is there a place that I could at least make a little money back to sell it?

Try installing a linux distro and run Prime 95 for a while or any other stress tester and see if it still dies. Or you could just pick up a new DVD drive.

Run Linux of a live cd for a while and see what happens. If the disc is checking out ok, then more then likely it is you DVD again. Not saying it couldn't be other problems but I would start there.

You could put the HD in a different laptop install and then deal with all the driver issues when you put it back in the Clevo.

cool. thanks for the tips. the only computer I could put my HD in is a desktop. From a quick glance at newegg I see there are 2.5" -> 3.5" adaptors, but will the difference in drivers be too severe? My desktop is pc100, 733Mhz p3, 256 SD ram onboard intel graphics vs my laptop which has 1GB DDR, 3Ghz 64bit AMD, ati 9700. Thats quite a few differences!
thanks again!

Just install the OS only and don't install any drivers. The OS will install some drivers on its own, so when you put the hdd back in your laptop it will act funny, but hopefully at that point you will be able to boot Windows and reinstall the necessary devices.

You will need to get that adapter to do it on your desktop.

got the adaptor and installed win xp sp2, got all the way to the first time you see the desktop and then put it back in the notebook.
it blue screened for a split second and rebooted once I got past BIOS. didn't even get through any part of loading windows at all. safe mode same deal.

I know I can boot from USB devices. perhaps I could hook a cd-rom into a USB kit and try to install that way?

major dissapointed, but I guess I at least have an extra HD for my desktop now.

Damn sorry to hear that man. I don't know if you can install off USB but anything is worth a shot.
