Need help networking two apple laptops in my house

As it is right now I have a linksys G router right next to my cable modem which is attached to my desktop Windows PC. A month ago I bought a macbook pro and loved it, my sister just 3 days ago received a macbook. We both noticed that we were not getting internet in our rooms in the house, (this is even with the linksys net extender). Can you guys please help? I was thinking of gettin the airport extreme base but not sure if this will solve our problem of not getting internet in our rooms. Whats weird is that our macbooks show that they see the linksys router but cannot connect to any web site servers. Any suggestions are most welcomed

Check your settings, both in the router and on your laptop, sounds like something is screwed up if you can connect to the router, but can't get past the router.

can you connect to the internet via the cable on both laptops when it's plugged into the router?

when you're near.... does that mean you are using the physical internet wire from the router to the laptop or still with wireless?

I'm guessing you have some configs set wrong or may have interference somewhere.

I have had nothing but trouble with Linksys routers and Macs. I have had really good luck with Netgear's gear, and DLink wihtout too many problems. I think that for what you get, the Apple Airport Extreme is a really good deal. Wireless N, USB port for printer and storage sharing, and wired ethernet connections. Plus if you use student discount on it, you can get it for $20 off, so $159.

Thanks stu I'm just worried that its range and speed isn't up to par to competitors because in benchmarks I see other brands beat it.

Hrm, I had heard that it was about on par with the other N routers, but that was when the new revision with DraftN came out, so it is possible that they have improved since then.

Like I said though, you can't go wrong with Netgear.
