Acer Travelmate 800 won't go on.

I've buyed 3-4 years ago an acer tm800, a few months ago i get a bsod so i thought power off and back on, but since then he won't start anymore.

The symptoms:
-Screen stays black, also with an external monitor
-Fans goes on for a few secs like always
-Keyboard leds flashes one time

I removed the harddisk and cdrom drive but no difference. I think the mainboard is death Out of warranty...

Is there anything that i can try? I saw on Ebay a new mainboard for this type but is it worth to replace it? It costs 180 euro

Maybe just a general cleanup (dust and grease) is needed, replacing of thermal paste on CPU, etc. RAM could have gone bad. Makes sense trying that since you are out of warranty and going to open it up (to replace motherboard) anyway.

I opened the notebook allready but there's no dust in it.
Yesterday i powered the notebook on and it was working again but my screen was full of squars stripes, also with an external monitor connected on the vga out.
The notebook was working stable but after a reboot the screen was back blank.

Edit: I also removed the memory

Garbled video on both LCD and external monitors hints at video chip general trouble or overheating. But, to tell you the truth, it's almost impossible to diagnose laptop issues remotely through forum unless it's exactly what someone else experienced and there is a known solution

If it was an overheating issue then the notebook should crash after a while, but now the screen stays blank, even if it was powered off for a few hours.

I have the same issue with my 8204!

It seems like the problems you described is very similar to mine!
No display on screen whatsoever! I tried powering on/off several times
and it would not work! My fan runs for about 10-15 secs and it stops running...hmm..I hope we will both find solutions to our problems!

I have Acer Travel Mate 800 also in 2003, the warranty already expired also.
I have almost the same issue like yours, fortunately I can still power on and still can load windows. But the problem is my screen showing a square and stripes with those machine language. I don't know what's wrong? does anybody experience like mine...
If squares and stripes is only on LCD but not on external monitor then it's probably damaged (from continuous use by opening and closing laptop screen) ribbon cable that connects video chip to LCD. It should not be "unseated" cable as in TM800 it is fastened with two screws AFAIK.

I've brought my laptop to acer center. They told that this is a vga problem but in order to place the broken vga they have to replace all the motherboard modul that will cost me around USD 450. I think this is not worth it... anybody here know how to fix the broken onboard vga.

Thanks
