Vista Is it really so bad?

I am going to step out on a limb here and say no, no its not.

The only problems Vista really has are

1. Its very pretty, this takes memory and processes so either look at eye candy suffer performance loss or turn all that off and have a super fast system

2. Drivers / Compatibility I know they could have made their OS pander to all the 3rd parties out there and do things the same way they did in XP. But then vista would be XP and its not its a bit different. So if you issue is driver or software compatibility related. DONT BLAME VISTA.

3. It looks different. well Duh its a new OS its supposed to look different.

I have used Vista now for about a year SP1 did speed things up a bit and I have fully tweaked out my new DELL XPS 1530 with the Below Guide.

Black Viper's Vista Super Tweaks

After doing this and getting a system native to Vista where all drivers and software is accounted for. I have to say this is the best system I have ever owned hands down.

I've only used Vista when I review notebooks, but I'ts pretty easy to pick up. There's a lot of good features that make it useful. But its hard to pry away from a very stable and capable OS known as... XP. I can't remember the last time my PC crashed used XP. Been over 2 years.

Well XP does seem like one of my oldest dearest friends as well we have been through thick and thin and it has rarely let me down. And it is my OS of choice still for Hand Built systems due to all the divers and software issues on Vista. But Vista just gets so much bad press lately from people who don't understand it. I think its a very misunderstood OS . The only crashes I have ever had on it have been Nvida Audio/Video driver related. And having my new Laptop with Vista installed and all drivers accounted for It has not crashed on my once.

I'll be the first to say that, "Yes, it is so bad."

Keep in mind, I only used it for two weeks on my 5760, then couldn't take it any longer. Completely fed up w/ the UAC and the ridiculously buried menu items, I nuked it and went back to XP.

Fiddle w/ linux on and off (just DL'd the latest Ubuntu last night) and actually came on NBF just now to look for... a Macbook. Didn't remember if there was a Mac section or not. Regardless, the reason I'm looking is... Vista. Vista's the new ME as far as I'm concerned.

For anyone that likes it, hey- great! But it just doesn't fit me at all. I wanted to love it. Waited waited and waited for it. Got the upgrade deal when I bought my 5760- but those first 2 weeks killed me. Absolutely horrible. Whoever thought up UAC needs to be taken out and flogged until all that is left is a few bones and some gristle.

I've worked with it and I like a lot of its features. What is getting to me are just immature drivers. They've come a long way since the launch of Vista but they're not a well performing as XP's drivers.

Gotta agree that Vista is a memory hog and needs to handle (tweak?) its resources better.

I've got a license for both Vista and XP, I went back to XP for performance. I will be jumping back to Vista again around July to give it a try once again, I hope that drivers are more mature and SP1 does what is supposed to do by then.

Yes, I work in the computer industry. Various of the issues with Vista people find is that they don't (want to) get used to the interface or want to use REALLY old stuff on it for which there are no Vista drivers.

Also some old programs do have problems with Vista, but most people don't know about Compatibility Mode. It works most of the time running really old programs but of course 100% compatibility is not guaranteed.

To show you I work in the computer business:

Where else in the industry would you be asked by a customer if he can have a Turion 64 laptop with Windows 98?

I had BSOD almost every 2 days with my Vista Home Premium, i was about to go back to XP but i updated to Vista SP1 and it is going smoothly since then, 2 weeks now with no crashes and no problems .

. strange that u had BSOD with vista even before SP1.
. glad to see that SP1 fixed what u had before that caused bsod
. would be very interesting to find out what was it that SP1 had fixed

cheers ...

I will be the first to say that with at least 2gb ram, the proper adjustments and SP1, it runs absolutely spectacular. Even 64 bit...

... but there are some things that must be turned off. And with the latest Nvidia driver beta, graphics are off the hook now. Crysis runs awesome in 64 bit as well as WoW, HL2 games and many other programs...

Just remember when XP came out in 2001... Things were bad like this too for a while. The technical one can defeat Vista's problems tho' and have a really faaaaast OS now. You just have to disable a thing or 2...

try reinstalling vista and SP it right out of the install. Then install chipset FIRST!!!, then do your will... Make sure to FULLY disable readyboost if you are not using it, and superfetch period. Superfetch sucks. Bad.... Real Bad... Like your computer will stop endlessly running your hard drive if you turn it off bad.

Had Vista Home Premium on a new laptop (not in my sig yet). With XP I always set GUI to look like Win 2000 and tweak it a bit. I quickly turned off UAC in Vista - that made it bearable. But I could not make file explorer into something at least remotely useable: no way to customize toolbars, no way to remove that window above directory tree, no way to tell it to always show files in list mode (I do not want details, or icons, or whatever else by default, I use list 99.9% of the time), glitches in tree view all the time.

And the funniest thing: how do you remove wallpaper (I know how to do it by editing registry, but that's not how it should work)?

And that's just a tip of the iceberg.

Had to drop Vista and install XP just to be able to use laptop.

Most of the problems I've had with Vista are my own. I let a friend screw around with my BIOS settings and for a while my machine ran like crap so I started dual booting XP. However, since my BIOS was hosed (and I didn't know it) XP was running like crap too. So I reset my BIOS out of frustration and BAM! Vista started running like a champ!

I by no means have the latest and greatest machine (specs in my sig) but everything except my processor rates a 5.9 on the Windows Experience test (processor rates a 5.1).

All in all I'm very happy with Vista. If you have the horsepower to run it I highly recommend getting it.

I agree with you Goo. Vista isn't that bad.

One of the biggest problems with Vista though, like you said, is drivers. I have to reboot a couple times a day because Creative's crappy driver dies and I lose sound.

Speaking from personal experience(s)? Or just from reading mostly "bad" presses?

cheers ...
