that can't be the only option........who would anyone buy that and why in the hell did they put a white/silver keyboard on that. So I guess my answer is yes, it is that ugly.
I voted that I would deal with it (if I was going to buy a new laptop) because plainly, I don't think it's the worst looking thing ever, and 8700GT SLi certainly would be nice. So, I'd deal with it if necessary.

Well my take is simple. I need Asthetics & performance, which means I keep my 1710's and look on the AW side (or elsewhere) once they have some nice looking machines.

I love my XPS2/1710's but this is a big letdown for me.

There are only 2 things about it I don't like at all.
1. Why is the touchpad shoved all the way over to the left? I am right handed and that looks like it would be a real pain in the ass.
2. The lid. The ugly, ugly, FUGLY lid.
Seeing the pics of this machine makes me real happy I didn't wait for it to come out. I would however like to have the numeric keypad on my 1710.

this machine may have some solid performance and SLI but both of those things i can have elsewhere... and elsewhere i wont have the totally fugly lid or to deal with a machine thats so thick its like going back in time.

Fidget: Anybody with similar technology in their system is going to have to make it as thick to accomodate the cooling solution for newer GPUs. Not to mention the fact that the 1730 also has a Physics card in it as well. The SLI Alienware's aren't a whole lot thinner than that. I saw the one Alienware loaned to Dukefrukem at QuakeCon, and another owned by a friend of a friend who attended a local LAN here.

I'm trying to get used to it, but I can't! Uuuuuuuurhhhrg....

I can see why it needs to be thick - but come on, designers can make it *look* thinner. Instead they've chosen to let it look like a toy.

but the fact of the matter is that the alienware is still thinner. as well i can actually take the AW to a meeting and not have other people at work look at me like WTF is that thing. right now if i have to i can bring my m1710 and with the LED's turned off it is quite a passable business machine. the 1730 just cant do that with the RED.

i know it is different for everybody but to me the physics card isnt much of an addition. i do have to give kudos to dell for putting it in but its not that huge a thing since most games dont make use of that tech. so i need to question the logic if thats what caused it to be even thicker. i personally would rather have dropped it in favour of a decrease in thickness and a change in the LCD lid to something less garish.

i like dell and i was all for the next gen m1730 when i initially heard some of the specs, dell really did listen and try to go all out. but when it comes to the thickness and looks of the machine its really not looking good and thats unfortunately a deal breaker for me when i am going to make a purchase.

Ok, whoever keeps asking about the touchpad....it's off center because the keyboard is off center. Most people are using the touchpad when they type or intermixed with it, so there would be no point in having to move your hand to use the touchpad, then back over to the keyboard.

Thank you and good night.

I really think they should have skipped the physics cards. Few games use them, they are in 1st gen production, and I think it's a marketing scheme more than anything.

They could have spent that money elsewhere....Perhaps in the design department.

I think the color combinations they show is awkward. The keyboard is a blemish on the machine, and I use my right hand for the mouse/touchpad so that is a Little awkward. I prefer it to be centered, of course I also prefer not to have a number pad, which is why the pad has to be off center, to accommodate the shifted keyboard.

Its the red headed stepchild of laptops and that white keyboard has to go cause its going to get filthy and stained no matter how hard you try to keep it clean .

From a performance standpoint it seems to have all the bells and whistles and upgrade paths one would hope for but its ugly and too thick and seems like a step backwards interms of design.

man this poll shows a lot of crying babies....
I'd vote twice if I could... It's pretty damn ugly... There are/will be better options for a good aesthetics/performance ratio.

To sum up:
UGLY. yes it is. Total design failure. Thickness makes it look bad... along with the white keyboard...

with minimal changes in the color, it can actually look descent....
That is one fugly design. I hope they have different colors than red because maybe blue would look a little less bad-attention-grabbing. I could live with the looks if it looked pretty inside, but it doesn't. Not with a 8700GT. Now if it had 2 8700GT's in SLI or a Dual GPU on a single card 8700GT, that's a different story...
Could someone photoshop the m1730 pictures? maybe changing the carbon fiber and the red to a different (and better) color combo?

From my experience, having the keyboard centered on a laptop is a lot better than having it semi-full sized and shifted, unless it's like a 20 inch laptop, and even then it's not really a laptop, but a desktop computer that folds into a screen and a keyboard.

So I chose the 5th option
