Took apart most of the M505x

I took off the keyboard and the shield plate under it.. you can see most of the 'insides' of the M505x.

The chipset/CPU socket/GPU/wireless card are all visible.

If you guys want a few more pics, let me know.

Wow...the 855 northbridge looks a lot like the P-M CPU.

And I discovered another thing.. the port where the subwoofer goes -- at the very back, there's an IDE connector for another harddrive.

is that the Intel 802.11b wifi card on the left, it appears to be socketed? if so, that answers our questions on whether or not the card IS NOT soldered directly to the board. it can be replaced.

do you suppose it is possible to connect another drive?

yeah can the wireless card be replaced with g wireless card?

If Gateway claims that the M505X has Intel Centrino mobile technology, then shouldn't it have the Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 card? Isn't that a standard Mini-PCI card and therefore replacable with most Mini-PCI cards? Am I missing something?

If you look at the photo looks like what it has.

Thank you vc178! I submitted a post about a week ago asking if someone has or would be willing to do exactly what you did. With the sheeting underneath the keyboard removed, it's easy to see the wifi card is socketed, and also used a main and an aux antenna. Thanks a bunch!

Now to find someone that's replaced the wifi card with a 802.11g (Intel or Dell) to see if it works properly.

It should work since the Intel Wireless Pro mini-PCI card uses the standard mini-PCI slot. I have heard people with compaq x1000 switching their Intel Wireless Pro with another WiFi mini-PCI card, and the new card works probably.

In case anyone is still wondering, the MiniPCI WiFi card in the M505 IS replaceable. It takes only about 10 minutes to physically make the swap. Like others, I have successfully installed a Dell TrueMobile 1300 802.11 b/g and also retained the Wireless button functionality.

I have a question. Im trying to do a case mod and im wondering how much power does that fan pull.

Hey does the top trim bezel where the centrino logo/touchpad lower trim come off easily? i am trying to have gateway replace it for me since mine has some chipping/scratch and rub marks when u close the LCD. The rubber thingys on top of the LCD is very tiny so the top lid will rub agains the lower touchpad/speaker area trim. Gateway is willing to replace the trim but i have to send it back to them... they will cover charges etc but if i can have them send the part to me I would rather replace the trim myself... any ideas if this piece comes off easily or not? thanks

I never managed to take that off.. I took off what was able to be "easily" taken off..

As for the pic.. yes; it's a dead link and unfortunately, I no longer have the picture. It had the keyboard and the sheeting underneath it removed and the CPU, it's socket, and a few more things of interested were able to be seen.

If there's enough interest, I will ATTEMPT to COMPLETELY take the M505x and share my information with you guys.

BTW: I'm sorry that I haven't been around. I haven't visited these forums since I received my M505 and got the slight USB ports problem of my M505 fixed.

And that fan... it doesn't seem to pull a lot of air... seems fairly weak.

Specs are probably around... (estimate):

3500-4000 RPM (At MAX speed)
8-10 CFMs (Cubic feet of air moved per minute)

I examined the bezel of the laptop and it doesn't seem to be able to come off easily... but when there's a will, there's a way.
