Terrible 5680 performance in Windows

I just got my 5680 back from having a screen problem and I've noticed terrible performance in the Windows desktop. Right clicks, the start menu, are all delayed by a few seconds. Along with dragging windows around and opening folders, there are strange noises coming out of the left portion of the computer (I think the hard drive) but not when its just idling. Games I do notice don't seem to have a performance hit.

your hardrives are on the right side beside your cd rom. on the left you have a battery bay and possibly powersuppy or vid card (don't know).

I've also noticed when I grab a window and drag it around the desktop, it will stick, or freeze, like its lagging behind. Keep in mind this a 3.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 7200 RPM hard drive...

Run Sandra benchmarks and look for anything out of the ordinary there. Also check for Spyware, viruses, and anything taking CPU or mem usage in the task manager and it's priority.

I downloaded and ran Sisandra 2004 and just ran the overall test, not sure what I'm looking for.

CPU Arithmetic Benchmark: 14150 (total)
CPU Multimedia benchmark: 58457
Memory Bandwidth Benchmark:8262
File System Benchmark: 30016
Combined Performance Index Wizard: 2936

I also have noticed this weird static sound when I scroll, open, or drag around windows. Also when I run over links sometimes in Internet Explorer there is a weird beep noise.

i would re-format, best way to know for sure that your computer is going to be fixed if it is a software problem

I reformatted before and still had the weird delaying effect.

Have you installed the Video Drivers? What you described sounds like windows is using its default drivers...do you have the ATi drivers installed?

I installed the drivers off the Sager CD, Mobility M10, Driver Provider: ATI Technologies Inc., Driver Date: 8/12/2003, Driver Version: 6.14.10.6378

i actually had this problem before, and it might actually be the video drivers that you have now. Try the drivers at omegacorner.com . They are the best IMO, and they never fail. Its that or too much heat is being produced, but i wouldnt worry about heat if windows is lagging.

I installed the Omega 2.5.30 drivers and I do not get the delays in the start menu but I'm still experiencing the strange noises. Now when I drag a window (with Internet Explorer) there is some trailing, like its a little behind.

Don't know about the noise (scary), but did you install the chipset drivers?

It's probably insulting to ask, but since you tou didn't mention them and they make a big performance difference I thought I would chip in....

The chipset drivers are required for both AGP and ide functioning. Windows basic drivers will work, but not as well.

The noise might be feedback through the sound card - update you relatek drivers and make sure that the line ins are all muted

I just updated the drivers, but the sound doesn't seem to be coming from my external speakers. It could be coming from the built-in speakers but since the static noise occurs in relation to the computer's activity I'm not so sure. It will also change in pitch to a kind of squeak sometimes. How do you mute the line-ins?

Audio controls. Via the realtek control panel which can be accessed by double clicking the icon in the system tray.

I have the same noise that comes from my speakers. I've posted about it before but just thought I'd chime in here. Basically anytime I do anything involving the video a static noise of varying pitch is emitted from the speakers. Playing certain games is particularly soundful even with no sound card installed. Running dxdiag's DX8 and DX9 rotating square test cause an even worse shreek out of them. Overall its not too loud for me to be irritated. Even in class its pretty much inaudible.

That being said it shouldn't be happening. My laptop is never perfectly quiet. At least I know when Adware or Spyware are running in the background because I can HEAR them :P After talking to them they said I could RMA it to have it fixed. Probably a grounding issue. Regardless I have not experienced poor windows performance as a result, so that must be another issue. Good luck in having it solved. Let me know if an RMA fixes it for you.

I KNOW exactly what this problem is! Its very simple to fix.

Umm... ok so its very easy to fix eh? How exactly do we do it then? After a year of it I'd be glad to be rid of the electronic noise coming through my speakers :sigh:
