yeah, I fudged the number, I meant 446, NOT 464.

AAAHHHH! Well then, that means my card is clocked at what it should be and RUNS great at that speed! I just went and played some more UT2k4 at 16x12 with the settings on the ATI control panel set to balanced and it runs flawlessly... That's a load off my mind that I don't have to call Dell again... thanks for the clearing that up Karl!

This is (possibly) good news for those of us who <sigh> have NOT received ours yet... at least there are some good cards being delivered....

Or, maybe it's just a crap shoot ("Well, Mr. XPS customer, you have to ask yourself one question.... do I feel lucky?")

this is scary,... after a couple hour of gaming on UT2k4... i can still barely hear the fan spinning..... maybe i am just used to hearing the loud arse fans on my alienware laptop... Hehe panther, i almost oced the card too but i am not too excited about OC anything in the laptop stuff, 'specially on a desktop replacement.

yeah i was worryied about the graphic card problem too but that turned out to be least of my worry.. It's the dvd burner i got that's giving me the headache.. unfortunally i can't downclock it or anything ... guess i will just give dell hell and get myself a burner replacement

Well I just went and checked out some hardware review sites and all of them claim that the 446mhz speed is the top speed for the 9700 cards, but that several implementors were not planning to run it at that top end speed (just specialty/hard core system developers like Alienware/Voodoo/Dell). Thus, I feel pretty good that my card is running as it should and gives me awesome performance!

Have confidence those of you waiting for your systems that Dell is shipping good systems!

Yeah, one of the three I've gotten is fine. I did some hardware swapping last night with the 2 XPS systems I have here to make one "pristine" system. One machine had a dead pixel, one had a bum graphics board, etc.

I made myself the "best" notebook I could out of the two, and now have a single 100% working XPS with no dead pixels and a working GPU.

But it's sad that I had to go through that.

By the way, Dell is nice enough to post service manuals for all their stuff, XPS included. It's ridiculously simple to take apart an XPS and swap out stuff.

If We Have to Call...

1.) My replacement XPS is arriving today, via Useless Parcel Service. It's been sitting at their station all weekend. Sigh
2.) I really hope i get a good one, if anyone is tight with the man above, put in a good word for me.

So, my question is this:

Does anyone have anyone's name, extension, or email at Dell who is familiar with this issue we're all talking about? I mean, when i get my replacement system today, and if it's got ANOTHER bad GPU, I can see the following happening: I call Dell, I get put on Tech Supp. with someone who goes, "OK, You're going to need to shutdown the computer," We all know by now there is no such thing as specialized XPS support. Hell, they don't even know what 3dmark is over there. Who to call, and what to say to get the replacment GPU?
Karl, where do you find the "service manuals" that you referred to that describe how to take apart an xps and fix things? thanks

Yeah, just go to the Dell support site, select your system, and under reference you can select Users Guides. The Service Manual is for download in there.

isnt Linage 2 still in beta?
Karl/Sakor, thanks, great stuff. I was looking at the recommended tools for the 8200, sorry for the noob question but what are the following tools:

Microprocessor extractor
Nonmarring plastic scribe

Thanks

Hey guys are you using powerstrip to see you core settings on your GPU's? I thought Panther04 or someone said thier XPS had come with it but mine didn't. Should I download it for any reason? Also what drivers are people using with their systems I'm using the ones that came with my system without any problems, but is their a set that's better? Thanks for any help in advance

A Microprocessor Extractor is another fancy term for a "screwdriver with a tip bent into an L".

Nonmarring plastic scribe is basically a fiberglass tipped point tool you can buy at Radio Shack, and is usually included in solder kits.

Yep. It's in open beta.

Though it's not the beta code that is contributing to this problem. With my "known working" GPU, everything runs just fine for hours.

SimpsonFan - If you install the Omega drivers, it adds another tab to the advanced graphic options which shows you/lets you change your clock settings... it's not available w/standard Dell or ATI drivers...

Or you can keep the Dell drivers and just install the Radlinker which does the same thing.

Well, I was able to run 3dMark 6 times consecutively with no lock-ups. But shortly thereafter, BF1942 kept locking-up. The time before the lock-up has varied from between approx 5 minutes to 35 minutes. I guess I'll get to try that infamous Dell support tomorrow.
