lol $360 for a 7950gtx just to squeeze 59/37 more out of a "600/800 7900gs" is not worth it...
lol but that is not the only difference between the cards. (the only thing wrong is the memory clock on the GTX)

On vista, with dell's latest stock drivers, I oc'ed my 7900gs using the 1.24v bios to 550/740, any higher, my screen turns complete red but windows did not crash, i just can't see anything, I can still shut off my laptop by pushing the power button and thats how I recover...

so anyways if i run my 7900gs at 550/740, using a 90w psu, would that be an issue? thanks!

lol i see your point... i only see 1 guy on ebay selling a 7950gtx for $350+$10 shipping, but it dun look too reliable, can i get a new one anywhere else?

i played Bioshock with my 90 W PSU, 600/800 (1.24 V) for 2 hours, BUT the supply was really really hot. (sometimes the supply can turns off directley, sometimes never....you never know). thats why i order a PA-13 130 W supply. i dont want to take a chance, i want to be safe. (3 days ago i run a 3dmark06 with 1.24 V, 600/800, suddenley the laptop turned black, i thought i killed it. it was strange, the battery was also empty, the PSU had turned off, and then battery to, i was lucky, next time i maybe mess up my 9400 really bad if i stay with my 90 W supply) remember that a PA-13 PSU CANT hurt your 9400/e1705, (its only doing well). think about all new heavy games who is coming (Crysis & Co). if you want to play safe and with Max performance with 1.24 volt (600/800) i suggest to buy a PA-13 (130 W) .

Are you guys using rev0 7900gs for overclocking to 600/800? My rev1 7900gs doesn't go more than 600/600 (with 1.24v).
yes. only Rev0 who have the memory optimized. (sorry)

just an aside about the psu, my original ebay sourced one broke a while back and I had no guarantee as it was not through dell (it was the thin cable into the body bent, breaking contact)

I'd advise going through dell, as you get the replacement if it fails.

Also, the new one I got from dell is a HELL of a lot lighter than the original one (forget old specs) which is way handy

New one is: rev A05 pa-13 family, model NADP-130AB D made by delta electronics

Cheers

to get back to the topic: i made a short benchmark with the bioshock demo using fraps. i started benchmarking as i left the diving capsule, played all the way until i got the first revolver from the woman with the baby buggy and stopped the benchmark there. on the way i picked up all the items and also looked around. the low min. fps are because of the cutscenes (i think there is some loading there), during the game it stayed pretty fluid. i set everything on max, global lighting on, 1280x800. my system & my clocks as in my signature.

2007-09-04 07:33:51 - Bioshock
Frames: 12442 - Time: 424196ms - Avg: 29.331 - Min: 13 - Max: 66

btw: i found, that if you start changing grafik settings during the game, after leaving the menu it became very choppy and barely playable. so i think it's best to set everything, restart the game and don't change the settings while playing anymore.

actually i didn't expect my laptop to run this game so well as i think 30 fps avg is ok. and the overclocking was very useful.

the price of an original dell adapter is twice the price of an ebay one... they are both original dells, if my ebay one breaks i'll just buy another... same thing... lol

min was 13fps!! thats when the 'real' action happens! just wait until you run into big daddy first battle... u'll get killed and wnot even know what happened hahaha you're getting avg 30fps because alot of the time there is nothing going on, especially at the beginning of the game when there are only 1 monsters at a time... wait till you encounter 5 of those zombie like people and a buzzing robo-helicopter shooting AND a stationary machine gun shooting.. ur avg fps will be alot less bearable at that time...

i play the game at 1024 x 760, shadows off, global light on, real time reflect off and THAT was just bearable with an overclock at 600/750 1.24v bios mod... it still drops to 10-20fps sometimes which is unbearable

no, that was because of the cut scene and the loading times connected to it.
i actually played more and it never became unplayable. and i think the
place where the water breaks into the glass corridor is demanding, still the fps were
very good there, and it was included in the benchmark. and keep in mind that 1/2 sec. of stuttering is already recorded as min fps.

i do all settings on, 1024x768 and it runs between 20-40FPS. I havent overclocked. I found that after changing gfx settings, the engine needs 2 minutes to smooth everything out.

and there is little to no choppiness

this sounds reasonable, mine is probably around 20-40 after oc also... i think we should just get a desktop for games...

Haha, that's my take on it. I loved my laptop in it's gaming prime (9300 to start) However It just costs too much to keep things up to date with it. So I think I'll be buying my next lappy as a 12-15" depending on what deal I can find out there

My 7900GS runs it fine. Considering its price (150) its a damn monster. This is the Unreal Engine 3 engine which can bring a an aging machine to its knees. I prefer laptops over desktops mainly for portable reasons.

But even w/ my 20-40 frames, there is no choppiness, maybe once or twice a level, but thats it. The firefights run smooth as a baby's bottom
