New Slim Apple Keyboard.

While I am at home I like to use my Macbook Pro on a desk with an external keyboard hooked up. Well unfortunately today that keyboard met an untimely demise. Lets just say that the peanut butter my neighbors toddler introduced to it didn't agree with it one bit. Instead of cleaning it out and considering it was a little old I decided to get a new keyboard.

Well to go along with my sexy Macbook Pro I decided to get one of those new slim keyboards they just released. Looking forward to getting it and will post some pics when I get it set up.

I will now need to find a wireless mouse to go with it. Some of the reviews people have posted stated that the USB ports on the keyboard don't supply enough power for wireless mice and iPods but I will see if mine works.

If it doesn't, does anyone have some decent bluetooth mice to recommend? Its strictly a desktop mouse as I have a Logitech v500 for portable use. I like to use wireless mice on a desktop environment because when working in some programs (And games) the cord seems to get in the way sometimes.

Looked through online for a few different style wireless options and I have to say I haven't found too many bluetooth options for a desktop style mouse.

Current "Desktop Mice":
- MX1000
- G5 Gaming Mouse
- MX Revolution

I like all these options but they still require a USB interface of some kind to plug into. I will still use the MX Revolution if the USB plug on the end of the keyboard will supply enough power, otherwise I will either have to hook up a USB hub or find a bluetooth mouse. But out of all the options I listed they sport a rechargeable battery which I like. At the end of each day I just toss the mouse on the charger and its good to go the next day.

--EDIT--

Now here are some Wiresless bluetooth options I have found:
- Logitech v470
- Apple MightyMouse
- Sony Wireless
- Logitech VX Nano (Not Bluetooth)

Now none of these I would classify as a desktop wireless mouse but they were the only options I really found so far of new mice that were bluetooth and did not require a USB connection. Now for the record all things Sony are outright off the table. I would prefer not to buy Sony ever again, but it was one of the few mice I was able to find. The first Logitech mouse is another notebook mouse with a nice design. But one thing that turns me off are the lack of additional buttons and the use of regular batteries. The second option is the Apple mightymouse. Now before these didn't get many good reviews because it was only a single click button. But it appears that they have since added the second click. It is stylish but it also lacks the buttons of the MX Revolution. And again it also uses regular batteries. The last mouse listed is not a bluetooth mouse but it was interesting enough to look at. It has an ultra small USB receiver that would make it almost as low profile as bluetooth but it still takes up a USB port. And it still doesn't have a rechargeable battery.

Now the rechargeable battery option is a big one for me as I don't normally keep a lot of batteries in stock. And I prefer keeping the rechargeable mouse topped off instead of making sure I have batteries around the house when I need them.

Out of all the options I found so far I would say that the mightymouse is the best bet for style and performance for me. If it indeed does have right-click capability then I would love that. What can I say, so used to right-clicking I do it without thinking about it. Even though it still uses regular batteries like all the others, it still has the feel of a desktop mouse while being wireless.

So I guess it's all up to whether the MX Revolution USB receiver can be powered by the new apple keyboard or not. It would be nice to have a Bluetooth mouse to have no USB what-so-ever but I still like the feel and additional buttons of the MX Rev.

--EDIT--

On a side note, does anyone know if using bluetooth over a USB wireless mouse is more battery efficient?

Well my keyboard arrived promptly by Fed Ex ground and I got to try it out first thing today. And I am pleased to say that it does indeed supply enough power for the MX Revolution to work. So with that settled I will be keeping my current mouse!

Now for Pictures:

Haven't had the chance to type on it for a length of time but so far it feels up to par for comfortable typing.

Has anybody had a chance to run it in Windows yet? If so, would installing the BootCamp drivers for the keyboard even on a non-mac system work? I just got a new windows desktop, and hate the keyboard that I have, really want to get this one, but if I can't make all the media buttons work then I figure why bother

I can try plugging it into my Dell computer running Windows XP but I don't plan on using Bootcamp on my mac any time soon. I have parallels but I don't think that is quite the same as a stand-alone windows system.

it isnt since Parallels passes keyboard and mouse input to the VM... that is why 2 finger right clicking, scrolling, Apple+C all work

apple USB in general fails to power much, especially laptop and keyboard USBs. Lets just say that the keyboard usb can't even power some (older model) flash drives. THe macbook can't power my mp3 player or my external hard drive (which is completely usb powered). That said...as far as mice go there is no beating Logitech G7

Funny because my macbook pro seems to power just about everything I have connected to it.

My Mobiblu mp3 player and WD Passport external harddrive both work flawlessly connected to the USB port and needing no aditional power. I just read reviews where the keyboard connection itself was the problem. But it turns out its not. Everything works fine.

As far as mice go I love my MX Rev, second scroll wheel and the frictionless scroll wheel are awesome for what I do. For gaming my trusty G5 corded mouse works fine.

Yea, my macbook can power my external 2.5" hard drive no problem... i only plug in the second cable for it when I am doing large transfers. Powers my ipod, my cell phone, and can run my external keypad, mouse, jump drives... all that jazz.

So fozz, you say that on your Slim Keyboard, the USB ports work just fine? I think it is hit or miss with them. One of the reasons I wish I had an Apple store nearby... I could easily return it if it was messed up.

Ok...

ANY Laptop not powering an external USB powered HD, is NOT the laptops fault really. USB was never designed to give much power, and the HDs that do it via two cables are trying to work their way around the USB spec in that regards.

I have had those come close to frying ports before, I refuse to use them, period. If you want bus powered hard drives use FireWire which IS designed to give that power.

there is the problem.... besides apple, not many other models have firewire 800 so unless you are a mac fanboy having firewire devices is really not practical since just about everything else is usb.
Well it's a good thing that firewire 400 is powered then because just about every laptop and computer has at least one FW 400 port.

The one thing that I constantly use Firewire on isn't even an Apple product. Its my DV camcorder.

Firewire is much a Sony popular port as it is Apple.

Yea but apple is pretty much the only manufacturer that actually puts a full size 6pin connector on their laptops, most other OEMs skimp and put a 4pin... but i really am unsure if that effects anything in terms of transfer rates or power delivery
post #15 of 23
4 pin has the same transfer rate but doesn't offer power.

Ah, see I knew there was a catch! Cheap, lazy Windows OEMs
post #17 of 23
Kakaze nailed it so technical arguments I will leave alone. There is unfortuantly only one other manufacturer that I know of that puts a full size FW port, and that is Samsung.

Well after spending some time with the keyboard I have to say its great to type on and it's now my new favourite keyboard to use!

I remember seeing someone else gripe about this. But if you need to use the F buttons as sotware controls rather than hardware (so use it as F4 instead of Voume Up for expample) how do you do that? I have looked at images, and there doesnt appear to be an Fn key.
The FN key is the top right key in the group of 6 over the arrow keys.
