Apple mac newbe - Page 2

Hi,

Can you choose what your mac runs on? I have heard of OS, OS X, tiger and a few others?

Thanks.

Tiger is simply OS X version 10.4.

Leopard is coming out sometime in the future. It is OS X version 10.5.

OS is just a general abbreviation for "operating system." These include Microsoft Windows Vista, Mac OS X, and the many flavors of Linux.

I hope that answers your question.

I hate the whole MB, MiB thing. Where MB is MegaByte, or 1,000,000 bytes, and MiB is MebiByte or 2^20 Bytes (I am pretty sure it is 2^20) so even though the HDD manufacturer's measure in MB, every gets their panties in a twist when they see that their 100GB drive only has 95GiB of free space. And since neither OS X or Windows makes that distinction... people get pissed. Though I have noticed that in OS X the progress bar doesnt read 1GB until 1024MB have transfered.

I hate this whole mega-giga-tera-binary byte thing that's started cropping up all the sudden too. When dealing with a computer a megabyte is 1024 bytes...I'm not gonna call it a megabibyte, that's just ridiculous.

And I think that hard drive manufacturers should be taken to task for selling 100 gig drives that aren't 100 gigs. It's deceptive, regardless of whether or not you're talking about binary bytes or literal bytes...computers see them in binary hard drives and other storage media should be labelled to conform with what a computer will see and report.
