S670 WM9 Dolby Digital out?

Hi, I just purchased a P25-S670 with the sole purpose that it play Microsoft's WM9 High Definition DVD formats as I think there are going to be a lot of these DVDs in the near future. It does it perfectly with one problem. According to Microsoft's WM9 help page, only certain soundcards support digital 5.1 surround sound output... guess what... Toshiba's sound card is not on that list, and I cannot get 5.1 surround with this laptop, and I have tried just about everything. I am thinking about returning it as that was the main reason I bought this laptop... I need a quiet, powerful computer that can output WM9 HDTV through component or DVI and with 5.1 digital output. This laptop is going to be the brains in my home theater system. Does anyone know if there is any way at all that I can get 5.1 digital output from this laptop from WM9 material? It works fine for normal DVDs. The problem is only with WM9 material. Thanks for any quick information as I need to decide if I am going to return this laptop within 6 days! I just cannot believe that Toshiba would put a soundcard in this laptop that cannot decode 5.1 digital with WM9 when that is one of their biggest selling points... the HDTV out etc.

Regards,
Sean

As I understand it, 5.1 digital audio on WM9 HD material is decoded by Windows Media Player rather than by hardware. WM9 is a specially encoded format, and like MP3 and MPEG-2, must be decoded by a software codec. So the decoding part is not the problem. The problem is in outputting the decoded audio. The sound card must be equipped with 6 D/A converters and 6 analog outputs to do this job. Very few laptops are equipped with such a sound device. You may want to try something like the Audigy 2 NX.

Agree with delta ... probably you can find card that supports it although may be a little pricey? think your choices are usb sound cards and (maybe) pc card?

Thanks for the help!

The USB Audigy looks like exactly what I was hoping for. Thanks for the info! Great site.... and kudos to Creative for this product!
