Apparently Dell's codename for the m1730 is 'the beast', think they have watched a few too many B movies LOL

I for one am extremely happy that Dell has finally decided to put a back-lit keyboard on a notebook. After playing with a friend's MacBook Pro recently, the one feature that i thought was incredible was the very useful back-lit keyboard. Kudos to Dell!

So are we to assume from this then that the two MXM slots previously thought to be designed for SLI are in fact to accomodate a separate GPU and PPU card instead.

I don't really know much about the PPU card though, so I guess they could fit into the same MXM slot as a GPU card, so effectively you have the choice of an SLI setup or a GPU + PPU setup. From what I've heard about the value of the Ageias to actual performance though, I would've thought most gamers would pick the SLI setup every time...

Awsome backlit keyboard.

As for the sheer bulk, no. That's the reason I love the current models. Its an inch or so think. I can carry most anywhere, and it's a gaming monster only challenged by my friends dual 8800GTX's. Adding an extra half inch to a laptop for a physics card seems stupid beyond all belief, and then ontop of that they carbon fiber the whole thing. This thing gets looks everywhere. A sexy black lid laptop, that has enough over the top class they had it in the Oceans 13 movie. Would the m1730 ever get the chance to follow up with Oceans 14? No, it would still be stuck in the trailer park kissing it's cousin.

Is the new backlit keyboard is completly different to the current keyboards (Power for backlight/Smaller size due to numberpad)? Ie - no chance of getting a backlit one into a 1710?
I think we can safely say, yes, it is completely different.

It looks decent on this pic.

That picture doesn't look like a widescreen 17" laptop. Or maybe it's just me.

Could just be the very low res they have on for some reason. Anybody else notice the Colin McRae Dirt icons? Stupid game.. damn steering lag.. *mumble*

The M1730 does NOT use MXM it uses a Dell Proprietary format for graphics cards (MXM uses edge connectors, where Dell graphics cards use ZIF connectors). The Physics card is a seperate component from the video card in the 1730. I posted a picture not too long ago of the graphics card which had two GPUs and two sets of memory chips on it. Since the 1730 does not use an nVidia chipset, SLi has to be done on the video card itself rather than in conjunction with the motherboard. So you will be able to have SLi and a Physics card in your M1730...however, I don't know if the Physics card is optional or not.

Will the single dual video card fit the Insprion 1720?

So you were asking if the SLI would fit on the 1720? My common sense tells me NO. I think there's a reason why the new XPS so much bulkier than the inspirons..
The M1730 XPS shares no parts with the 1720 Inspiron other than maybe the screen. The video card isn't even on the same side of the Laptop.

But yes, the added bulk of the 1730 is due to the SLi graphics and the Physics card and all the other bells and whistles we didn't get on the 1710. The Alienware 9750 isn't much slimmer than the 1730. (I got a good look at the one Dukefrukem brought to QuakeCon)

Okay that's great it has PhysX and SLi, but it still looks just a tad bit to ugly...

Actually, that new pic, although blurry, has changed my mind a bit. I think it def looks interesting and not anywhere near as bad as those previous pictures....

I hope they do change the LCD cover looks though.
