well the display latch on my 7700 just busted

On the right side, it just snapped off so there goes closing and opening the laptop. As if this thing hasn't fallen apart enough over the past two years.

So can I get a replacement from any third parties? The warranty expired, and I would rather not deal with Alienware if I can help it. I don't have many good things to say about them, and even less if I have to actually talk to anybody from there.

Try rjtech.com.

If that doesn't work, try either Clevo (the manufacturer of the d900 line) or Excel computer for used parts.

Hi Dib

I have a spare Latch. If you PM me with your details I will pop it in the post.

Thanks for the sites! I gave the first one a call now so I'll see where that goes.

And I should have said hinge instead of latch, sorry. It's been a long morning, having your laptop's hinge break does not help.

Well I finally found out what caused this, the tiny screws they use to weight the entire screen had broken off inside the hinge (the one that unscrews from the rear of the machine) and wasn't supporting the tension when closing it, so the casing around it finally snapped because that was the only flimsy component really supporting it.

Bravo, Alienware. You win yet another round in making my laptop fall apart at the seams (literally).

I don't think I can get the screw out, does anybody know how to replace an entire display hinge? It's connected into the display itself so it probably entails opening that which _really_ makes me cringe, but I don't see any other option unless there's a way to clear out the screw bit.

Yeah, the hinges and latches used for the LCDs are pretty flimsy.

I have a pair of broken latches on one of the used/broken systems I bought, and I have a broken case bottom that won't accept screws through the underside to anchor the LCD panel in place. They're easy to replace, but it's damn irritating to pay ridiculous amounts of money for such small parts.

Anyways, to replace the hinge, you're going to need to take the LCD panel assembly apart. The screws holding the assembly together are behind the rubber caps. Use a guitar pick or an old credit card (or anything plastic) to separate the plastic halves. Don't use a screwdriver to pry it open as you'll damage the plastic.

Yeah I figured they'd be hiding under those, I just really hate the idea of dissecting that portion because I know it's going to be fragile. It sounds like you've done it before, so if it's possible I suppose I'll fumble my way through it and manage somehow.
