Asus W3J-H026P vs. Asus G1S-X1

Hi there! My first post here, so be nice :P

I am a freshman college student who is trying to purchase a laptop that is going to last for at least 4 years without spending an insane amount of money. I do some gaming, but for the last 3-4 years, I've only gamed on my desktop.

AMD 3200+
256 ATi Radeon x1600 XT
2 GIG ram

Basically, the two laptops I'm looking at will already outperform this desktop, lol. So, my question is not really which one is going to outperform what I've currently got.

I gotta admit, I fell in love with the brushed aluminum on the W3J. I really, really, love it. Also, I like the hotswap, and the weight of the W3J. 4.4 lbs running at bare minimum is going to be great for carrying it around to all my classrooms. I found a place to purchase this laptop for $1500. I would also purchase memory to upgrade the RAM to 2 gigs.

The G1S-X1 I found on eBay for a good price, comparable to the W3J. The biggest difference I see are the bigger screen, with one heck of a nice native resolution, and a video card that is twice the benchmark. The downsides are the loss of the brushed aluminum case, and the nice portability.

Should I go for portability / style? Or should I go for something a little heavier with better graphics? They would end up being about the same price when I'm all said and done. I'm afraid the x1600 in the W3J is going to become outdated too quickly and cause me problems later on.

Any ideas / opinions?

Also, one other question. Say I bought the W3J-H037P (1.66 gHz instead of 2.0) ... can I later upgrade the processor myself?

here's a quick rundown of what came to mind when you compare those 2 models:

build quality:
W3J should be noticeably better built than the G1S

availability:
W3J is end-of-life and $1500 seems a bit expensive for last year's technology. also, the X1 version of the G1S is the one sold at Best Buy stores, so if there's one near you, you can check it out

graphics:
the G1S has a substantial advantage, as you mentioned. If you anticipate using anything that requires DirectX 10, get the G1S. The W3J has slightly less powerful graphics card than your desktop.

CPU upgrade:
yes, you can upgrade the CPU on the W3J, although it would void Asus' global warranty

alternatives:
in my opinion, I think it might be worth it for you to look at the Asus V2S. It's a 14" notebook, which meets your size and weight preferences, and it has an 8600M GS graphics card, which is DirectX 10 capable and somewhere between the performance level of your desktop graphics card and the 8600M GT in the G1S.
