Poor CS:S performance

Thread Starter
AMD X2 4000 proc.
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 612mb
2 gig corsair value
Windows Vista 64bit

In the video stress test I average 33 fps everything high no AA. In game I see frames drop all the way down to 11!!! I have no idea why out of the blue Counter Strike Source is giving my PC troubles. I HAD the new Nvidia beta drivers but recently reverted back and still the same results! Please any help would be appreciated. Even if I lower the settings my frames dont really go above 40.

uninstall your GPU drivers and re-install.....try a few different drivers. Did it used to work under Vista?
yes you should def be getting way more than 33 FPS, even with nVidia cards
post #4 of 13
Yes, I agree with you. There is something wrong with the driver. You should definitely be getting more than 33 fps. Try installing different drivers. Here's a good place for nVidia drivers. www.laptopvideo2go.com

I don't know whatswrong it sounds like its vista but even i can get like 30fps even with my 8400m gt but it sounds like its vista especially since theyre suppose to be having lots of trouble with drivers and stuff in it.

NVidia has some "hotfixes" that are for Windows Vista that are supposed to fix problems such as these. You can try downloading them to see if they help your performance. Here is the link
http://www.nvidia.com/object/windows..._hotfixes.html

You are suppose to download and install the newest Forceware 163 drivers before downloading the hotfixes. This link is on the same webpage.

That's way low. I have vista (32) and with the newest drivers I get over 120fps constantly. And I have the 320meg version of the 8800...

Also spartan, thank you for posting! You may have just solved my bf2142 crashes

Well, the thanks stands...but the hotfix didn't work. Maybe I need to reinstall video drivers and THEN install the hotfix?

You're Welcome, I am always glad to post and help out since I know how frustrating it gets sometimes to have a good video card and not be able to use it to it's max potential.

As for your question, the nVidia site says that it is recommended to install the newest driver first then the hotfix.(There are two hotfixes, one for directX10 cards and another for direct X9 cards) But, I think that it shouldn't matter. Did you install the right hotfix? Also these hotfixes are also the first ones, so Microsoft is still working with nVidia to solve these gaming issues, which means future hotfixes. I guess that we have to be patient a little..while longer.

Hmm that could be the problem, do you know how I can *uninstall* the hotfix? so I can get it right this time around?

1. Go to "Windows updates."

2.Click on the bottom left corner on "Installed Updates"

3.Look for "Hotfix for Microsoft Windows." I forget what number goes after that so you have to go back to the website to look for it.

4.Right-Click on it then Uninstall.

Restart.
