Macbook Pro Shutdown problem

Thread Starter
I started having an issue with my Macbook pro randomly shutting down on me. I thought I was just running out of power at first but now I have started paying attention and see that I get now low battery warning. The last time it shut down I turned the laptop over and the battery still had 3 green lights.

It does not do this on AC power though. Not sure if my battery is just dead or it has shutdown problems.

I did read the sticky article and that was for the Macbooks. So before I decide to call in warranty I wanted to ask. Are Macbooks and Macbook pros are different when it comes to the firmware fix listed in the article? Could it just be an old battery or should I call into Apple to have it looked at?

--EDIT--

Just getting kind frustrating because now that school is starting back up again it would suck if the laptop shutdown in the middle of class and I couldn't get it to turn back on again without AC power.

Does it actually shut down? Or does it just turn of(Without taking the time to shut down?)

Ah yes it dies just power off instead of shuts down. No low battery warning or any warning of any kind. It just powers off out of the blue.

Sounds like you most likely have a bad battery...especially if it doesn't do it when connected to the mains.

I was fairly certain that the firmware fix was for both MB and MBP, but I could be wrong. If there is an Apple store near you, take it into them... if you havent had the machine that long, and the battery is still relatively fresh (under 200-300 cycles) then you should have a strong case for a replacement.

Its coming up on a year old so the battery may just be dead. I checked the battery recall page and the model number maches but the serial number range does not.

And as for a store near me... Not for 300 miles. If I do anything its a mail in process.

--EDIT--

Reading some info, others have the same issue and I do. 30%ish battery life left and the machine just turns off. As said before its looking like a dead battery.

Agreed your battery is likely the problem, most specifically it sounds like a connection either internally, or between the battery and laptop, is to blame, not making a clean connection which is building up resistance and you are not getting the correct flow of electricity, causing a buildup of heat and more resistance until things crap out on a decent power draw.

There's a nice utility called CoconutBattery that could tell you (by percentage) how much your battery has decayed. Not sure if it will help diagnose your problem, but I hope it will help you quantify it at least.

Ok so this is weird. I had a CD in the notebook today and was running VMware. Well I just started the program and while Was loading the computer turned off. It was in no way hot, hardly even warm to the touch and there was plenty of battery life left (75% +)

This is getting annoying as its the only computer I have and I can't just mail it off for repair. And my warranty is dangerously close to expiring

So not sure if it was the extra load on the CPU or the CD spinning up but those are the two changes from the norm.

See my post above, it sounds like a connection is not being made cleanly, and it builds up resistance and the extra power draw is more than can be delivered and it shuts down.

Take care of it before your warranty runs out.

So and idea if its Mac side or battery side? Ugh mailing it off would suck

--EDIT--

Actually just called apple and he did a test and found that I did have a defective battery. Didn't match the website range but the system profiler readout confirmed it. So they are mailing me a new battery!

Thanks for the help, guess I am still a little nervous over my first Mac :P

Yes chances are it is on the battery side. On the mac side you are much more likely to have a short which would cause a different set of problems. Glad to know they are sending you a new battery, that is why I was saying to take care of it before your warranty runs out. Laptops it is worth it to go ahead and get the extended warranty just in case if you haven't already IMO.

I still have til october on my original warranty but I plan to pick up the applecare warranty before it runs out. its my only computer so I need to make sure I have an easy way to keep it going.

Found those guys on the web, my only warranty dealings are with Dell and they are the only ones who sell their warranty packages. But as I am a student I am also cheap so I am curious is that legit? Oy, more web searching I go :P

If it is to good to be true...

It probably is. And that is a large amount for it to be true. Selling Applecare I could see as being legal and legit, but for that much of a price difference I am fairly sure I am smelling something other than legit. In this case it appears they are purchasing on some sort of discount they are not supposed to be, as the student discount brings it down to near that price, but they appear to be offering it to everyone at that price.

Update: My new battery came in, very quick I might add, and now the battery actually lasts longer than an hour!

Also thanks for the reminder Seablade. I purchased the laptop via student discount but totally forgot to look for the Apple Care plan under that section as well. I picked up the extended warranty for 239USD.

Its being mailed though so I assume its a care package with instructions and such.

Sounds like a dodgy battery to me- happened to my battery on my macbook pro even thought it apparently wasn't one of the problems ones lol

I think I opened it up and had 200 hours of battery then 2 mins later it died lol
Apple will probably replace the battery if you contact them
