Ubuntu studio is basically just Ubuntu 7.04. Its got a nice new look and a LOT of extra programs installed, mostly to cater to the audio/visual editor and enthusiast. There are a couple of extra graphics programs installed though. Overall its a very nice distro, but if you dont need the extra stuff, or just want to install it on your own, go with vanilla k/ubuntu.

Well I am setting up a computer that is going to be used for Music/Movies and lite web browsing.

Terrible placement of this poll.

It's like going to a party for cow ranchers and asking "so how many of you like beef?"

It kind of makes sense. If was to post it in General it would have been buried inside half a day due to all the "What notebook should I get" or the "Is this a good system" threads.

You might not need it. Do you plan on doing a lot of music/video editing? If you want it though, go for it, its nice.

No editing just using it for a media center. I just don't want to have to go out looking for codec's. And the person using it has no clue about Linux, Yet. Its an older computer that XP is just killing.

I guess that works out well then

Not really.

The main point I started the poll was because I was noticing an increase in the amount of Mods in this section, and I knew from personal experience there were a few current CRs from thsi section. I was curious to know exactly how many mods, admins, and CRs from the current stock used linux, and as such this was a good place to post the poll. Maybe not the best as not everyone that uses linux reads here often, but decent.

Along with that I was curious as to this section's curent numbers, and I know that a few people that read here still have not posted or voted. But it is interesting to see none the less.

So the poll is not really to find out who don't use linux, vs who does, but rather just to find out who does and how often, which this makes a very good section for.

If you just want to use it as a media center, check out a few of the Myth-Centric distros, Mythdora and Knopmyth. As long as oyu ahve a video card that supports XVMC you should be decent.

Slashdot | Three MythTV Linux Distros Compared
Quote:
Linux.com has a comparison article up looking at three MythTV-focused Linux distributions. The piece looks at Mythdora, Mythbuntu, and KnoppMyth, with an eye towards ease of installation and the actual utility of the install. From the article: 'For regular system maintenance, KnoppMyth simply isn't in the same ballpark as MythBuntu and MythDora. The live CD heritage of Knoppix means you cannot update individual packages, which is fine if you like that, but for an always-on system like a MythTV back end, I'd prefer flexibility and configurability of a mainline distro. When all is said and done, if I were building my TiVo replacement today, I would do it with MythDora. MythBuntu shows a lot of promise, and I will give the final 7.10 release another look (in part because I run Ubuntu on my desktop machines), but it isn't ready yet.

- Openwrt on the WRT54G (not sure if that counts).
- Ubuntu dual-booted

I never really got into using Linux full time because of the applications that I need on this side (but I'm confortable with everything else). Once in a while I need to video edit (dv->dvd author with menus and such) and image edit (but that can be solved with Gimp).

I was starting to look at Ubuntu Studio. Does it have good applications that can do that? I mean, the video edit tasks are just that: dv->dvd export w/ menus. No effects, nothing. Well... maybe the typical "fade" .

I do and I love making code that use stat.h just so its not portable

Kubuntu for now as my window compositing is not working with my driver and I'm too lazy to try a different one as I think its the card. I just needed a nice feature-rich window manager to fall back into and not to mention a quite nice desktop environment.

Do you use Vegas Video/Adobe Premiere? I haven't found any Linux app that compares at all. Kino doesn't cut it, haven't tried Cinerrella. It might work for what you need, but for heavy editing Vegas is the way to go. The only thing I really use Windows for anymore is Photoshop, Vegas Video, and gaming. Most of the games I play work perfectly fine with Wine, but I'm lazy so I still have the Windows box. I actually need Windows for router/network emulator too, haven't found anything that compares in Linux yet. Anyone know of a good one?

Well, I don't have Linux installed on my box (i used to) simply because with a 30gb hd, i need every kb i can get. I still run DSL and Ubuntu live alot though, and will install it again as soon as I have some space to spare. WinXP is stuck here until I can hook up my phone and run games from Linux. Hope to dual boot using dell mediadirect when i upgrade my laptop.

Will test out Mint XFCE edition as soon as it finishes downloading!

Premiere. I got a nice deal here. I think I don't use 80% of its features, but it works well for what I'm doing. It's basically DV import->cut/edit/paste scenes->dvd author (menus etc.). Sometimes I export to mpeg instead of DVD, but that's it. Then, I burn the DVDs using Nero (if I'm on Windows at the time). Basic stuff. I've seen Vegas already (on net), but considering my deal w/ Premiere and my needs, I don't even bother looking for other software. Probably that's why I never tried similar Linux apps. Anyway, I will eventually need to upgrade from XP, and if that means Vista, it's a NO (used for some time. feels like a more difficult XP, but with the same limitations). I could try others to switch definitely to Linux (and save space erasing windows from my now small 60gb HDD), because I would have a reason to do so, if that makes any sense. I don't play too much games anymore, but most of them works on Linux already. Can those (cinelerra/kino) do those video edit tasks well?

never tried kino, but im going to try cinelerra once i get Gentoo on my desktop finished setting up. i love premier, but im tired of adobe's misrepresenting crap and pisspoor support for Vista

Cinelerra is supposed to be pretty powerful, you might want to make sure you get the community version as that gets updated a bit more than the Heroine Warrior version, the history of the two is a bit convoluted, but basically patches from either/or might or might not make it into the other version.

Kino is more along the lines of iMovie. That being said I have not found one on either side that I am as fond of as I am of iMovie and FCP.
