Replacing a fried 7800 go, need recommendation

Thread Starter
My E1705's 7800 Go decided to die last week and I've been watching ebay trying to decide if I should go with a 7900GS or a 7900GTX + 130W powerbrick.

I'm just a casual gamer so I was opting for the GS but the prices for the GS are not significantly less than the GTX from what I see. OTOH, the performance difference is quite high at least in terms of benchmarks.

My main concerns are heat now, if I get the GTX will it run significantly hotter than the GS during normal use? I don't want to deal with another dead card or a hot laptop.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Just get what you can afford, the GS is a good option, if you only casually game then you may not need a GTX but if you can afford it then why not.

GTX will actually run cooler.

Unless you manage to buy a 7900gs dual pipe. A few of those were doing the rounds on ebay... maybe you'll get lucky?

Its really just an issue of whether you are willing to use the 130W brick for gaming. It is a significantly bigger brick.

If you're not looking for a lot of hassle, I'd drop in a 7900 GS or one of those 1500/2500/3500m's although I'm not sure of the latter of the cards. Apparently they're the same cards except the 1500/2500/3500 one is remarked for professional use, and the 7xxx/8xxx is just the gaming/regular version or whatever.

I am new to all this stuff. My 9400 has the 7800 and I was looking to upgrade. What exactly is this brick you speak of? I dont plan to oc it so will I also need to worry about cooling issues? Is it really that hard to upgrade to a different card? The more expensive the better I would think, but its the same reason I'm on this forum

The "brick" is the laptop power supply

If your going to run a 7900 or higher video card you need the 130 watt "brick" for it

With a 7900 GS or 1500m/2500m/3500m u can just drop it in and it'll work of course, if you get a dual pipe version you'd have to make a REALLY REALLY small modification to your case which is super easy to do. Otherwise if you get a single pipe version just drop it in and go. No XPS power brick needed.

I'm not sure about the 7900GTX, but I think 7950GTX is going to need a XPS power brick, but otherwise its pretty much drop and play as well I believe.

The Cooling Pipes which trasfer the heat from the GPU block down to the fins where the fans blow air across for cooling

The Stock 9400 7900GS is a singloe pipe, the M1710 has Dual

I have attached some pics of a sungle and Dual pipe for you
