7900GTX Overclocking

Hi all,

I'm a bit of a newbie with this, please bear with me! Following the release of BioShock, I'm interested in overclocking my 7900GTX a bit to squeeze a few extra fps out. I've seen a number of threads referring to a BIOS flash for video cards, but was wondering if this is the only way to do it. With my old desktop I just used Rivatuner to adjust the core/mem frequencies. Is this still possible with a 7900GTX Go?

I know that the stock frequencies for this card are 500/600. Given that my warranty for my XPS M1710 has/is about to run out, I'd prefer not to push it too far (at least for the moment). Roughly what frequencies have other people overclocked to? Is there a significant rise in GPU temperature?

Thanks for any help.

There is a byte in the bios that controls higher-level overclocking. Its by default set to a value which prevents overclocking. This is why you must flash the card in order to overclock via high-level software.

I have no clue what the 7900GTX can do but I have a 7950GTX and I'd say just about anyone could do 620/800.

I have the 7900gtx with Vista32. Using ATITool 0.27 b2 to overclock and JuanLu's bios:

Clocks I run at are 600/700 and when playing Bioshock I play at 620/730 at the moment and temps are ok. Now when you hit 'Scan for artifacts' with these clocks you probably will get errors. However I don't experience problems in games. If I even try to clock with 750mem then 3dmark06 just won't run properly (light blue screen).

Every card clocks differently so just start at some numbers and slowly test with games or 3dmark06.

Mmm, well I'm a student so sadly my financial situation means that my laptop's warranty is one of the last things on my mind .

Thanks for the suggestions, I've actually gone ahead with a BIOS flash CD I found on these forums (by hammerd I think) which seems to have shown some improvement, currently running at 575/710. Oddly I was only getting aout 7000 marks in 3dmark05 before overclocking, maybe it's Vista taking its toll? Anyhow it's jumped up to 8700 which is nice, might try and push it a little further but I'm quite happy with that performance increase.

Thanks for the help.

If you are a student, and no money to buy warranty. I highly suggest you NOT to o/c it anymore, and try to protect your $3k investment.

This is from first hand experience.
