i'm sure there's another thread about this topic, but too lazy to look for it. basically what combination is best, buy 2x1gb of ram and replace both 2x512gb of ram, or just buy one 2gb of ram and replace one of 512gb of ram? is the 2.5gb of ram faster even though it's not matched?

thanks for you replies

just go buy 2x 2gb sticks. and replace them. you don“t need to use 64Bit System for now(u need a 64-bit OS to utilize 4gb ram). Just wait the driver issues solved.

u want dual channel RAM if you get any RAM. So stick with either 2x1 Gig or 2x2 Gig Ram.. right now the Os 32 bit will only recognize 3.2 Gig of RAM
Make sure you get 200pin So-Dimm DDR2 RAM at 667mhz either cas latency 5 or 4, which can be found at newegg.com

ya, i only want 2gb max so i was just wondering if 2x1gb was better, or one 2gb + one 512mb. i still have to call alienware support to see if i can buy third party and install or have to go through them.

thanks for replies.

You are supposed to used matched pairs of ram or else your pc might not work in Dual mode where the two cpu's can work simulaneously. You will see that stick of ram are often sold in pairs. That is why. However, I bought two individual sticks of 4 latency G.Skill ram from NewEgg and they same to be working great.

When I asked Alienware support about instally my ram, they recommended this link. http://4help.alienware.com/cgi-bin/a...i=&p_topview=1

It was a big help for me.

I use CPU-Z to see what my computer RAM is working at plus it gives u the temp and other information everything you want to know and more...

The most common memory test software is called memtest. It's free, though there's a more robust pay version also...

is there any real reason to use memtest unless you're overclocking and you need absolute stability?

I just got 2 2GB of OCZ memory, but my system only recognize 2.5GB. do I have faulty memory? Who else has 4GB worth of memory in their m9750 system.

the OS will only recognize 2.5-3.25 Gigs not the entire 4 Gigs. I have heard of some people only being able to recognize 2.5 and some can get up to 3.25 I have heard if you have linux that the entire 4 gigs will show up. Its a microsoft thing...
here a website that explains what is going on...

I used memtest to see if my unmatched memory sticks are similar enough to work in dual 667 mode. They are.

No. But if you're having memory instability, this is a good program to use to try to identify the issue, and the bad stick of memory.

It's a windows issue. I think XP can only see 2.8G, and Vista is a bit more, but not 4 full G.

Other programs can use the memory though...
