Gotta agree that RAID 0 isn't really worth the hassle .. but, you will learn a lot if you set it up - when something goes wrong, it's not always easy to fix!

Well, I suppose I can save some money without raid. I don't really need two 150gb raptors and two 500gb samsung. One each for now. Thanks for the suggestions guys/gals =)

and another update

Bought today..

2x Panaflo 80x25 Ultra High Speed fans for the chipset coolers
1x Noctua NC-U6 Chipset Cooler
1x Techflex Wire Sleeving Kit (Black)

This worklog is going to be HUGE!

Lapped and Bowed D-tek Fuzion Waterblock

*Very Important to remove this from the gasket inside the waterblock
The rubber left over can clog the tubes, the barbs, the pump if it were to come loose inside the block.

This is how it should look after removing the excess from the gasket.

This is my work station for this lapping session.

Before

After, with 400,800,2000 grit sandpaper.

This is an amazing mod you can do to your D-tek Fuzion waterblock. Remember that o-ring I bought? You insert it as shown in the picture and screw it all back together. What this o-ring does, is seal the gap between the inlet jets and BOWS the waterblock center. What bowing does is it causes increased contact pressure to the center of the cpu heatsink and lowering temps even further.

Tomorrow I'll be doing some more lapping on my southbridge and sleeving some fan wire.... Taking some pics of the new stuff.

I bought the rest of the 120x38mm panflo fans for the radiator and a Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty Champion soundcard.

Should be fun.

About 80 passes with 400 grit paper, shows the middle is bowed, but isn't flat enough for my liking

160 passes with 2nd sheet of 400 grit paper

I forget how long I lapped it with 2000 grit to get this shine.

I used a tiny flat head screwdriver to remove the pins for the fan headers

Hardest part was having to walk the sleeving down, like an inch worm.

Before and after.

Thanks pd.

I had to bust out the dremel last night. I had to cut out some of the fans to get the sleeving to lock in.

It was fun.

How long time wise did it take to get rid of that bow?

45 mins to an hour maybe. It took longer than normal for this heatsink. I knew the edges of the heatsink don't really matter, because of the size of the chip it will be cooling. I just wanted the middle to be flat and shiny.

Very Impressive GQ it turned out amazing.

These work log threads are giving me an idea.

If we could post the desktop thread in the main forum index instead of buried in OT it would probably generate considerably more traffic. I didn't notice this forum for a long time after I joined.

I had no reason to go into OT. I think a lot of people would be surprised to find there is a desktop sub-forum...

When I finish this, I'm going to make a complete guide to everything I did in here.

Agree it would be good to get more involvement in this section. There are other great forums for DIY builds, but lots of beginners or people who have just been using a notebook are not going to be comfortable posting in some of those.

Threads like GQ's give folks a lot of info, that they'd never even think about if they don't do a lot of research.
