ACER <- Gateway/eMachines

For those of you who have not heard, Acer has purchased Gateway which now makes Acer the #3 PC maker. After watching the mergers over the years, and with the recent back to school season, I think that HP has made a comeback with some decent machines. Dell is about the same, the Jury is still out on Lenovo and Dell seems to be slipping.

When GW bought eMachines, I had hoped that they would take the opportunity to revamp their product line and revitalize their product line.

So now that Acer has taken them over, how do you think the future will play out?

Gateways stupid decisions is why I left eMachines tech support

in the mean time, Gateway yesterday announced intention to buy Packard Bell from NEC, so we're going to end up with Acer owning something weird

Why in the heck would GW buy PB after they had to take a leave from the US market for all of those sub-quality machines and they are being bought out themselves. At a reduced price even! PB must be almost free.

Now It would have made sense to me for eMachine (pre-GW) to have bought out PB because eMachines made their name on taking the same business philosophy as PB but more QC to produce a more reliable machine at a cheaper price. Sort of like Hundai buying out Yugo! (Well at least the original Hundai - They make some pretty rock solid cars these days! )

GW eyed PB long time ago before the acer deal, they were (are?) trying to get into the european (minus england) market and PB is quite popular on the continent. GW has so or so some headway into the british market, very slow

eMachines would not bother with PB because targa, using the same footprint in many of the machines, is already a force in europe

well emachines did have a presence in europe, them buying PB would have helped them increase that
