M1730... not that bad indeed!

Thread Starter
Well, I just came across some new screenies of the color options for the 1730...

... What do you guys think? Personally, I think the black and silver options aren't so bad.

Where do you get silver from? I'm sorry but those pictures show a distinctively white keyboard.

Looks white to me

Who cares what it looks like? It's a freakin' laptop! I think the 1710 is a nice laptop....except when those stupid LEDs are on. Mine are kept off permanently unless I want to show friends/families my "poseur lights".

Don't be a poseur. What's important to any PC is how it performs, not how it looks.

#1. I think my poll speaks for itself... http://www.notebookforums.com/thread202632.html #2. Dropping 4K on a machine... It better look good (would you drop 45k on a car that looked like crap but drove well?) #3. If you hate the LED's so much why didn't you jsut grab a M90? Slight loss in performance but it will not look so bad. ( Weren't you just complaining about people bitching about the looks?-I believe you called them poseurs)

Apparently you do. Else why did you add a personalization shield to your 1710?

I added it to protect the flimsy finish on the 1710. No desire to put in a silly 8X10 photo in it of a stupid video game or nerdy like that. Same reason that my PDA, iPod and Blackberry all have screen PROTECTORS on them and the same reason I wax my car and park it on a garage. Protection! The shield cost me only $30 CAD including shipping so small price to pay to reduce the wear and tear on a very expensive asset to my Company.

The 1710 actually looks a LOT better WITHOUT the shield than with (the faux carbon look is almost gone now), if you want to pick nits.

How many more threads are we going to see about how the new 1730 looks? I bet it rivals all those old threads about screen sparkle and light leakage.

Sorry, never read your poll so no comment.

Your comment re: dropping $$$ on car that drove well? There are a ton of cars under $45,000 that drive great and look good to boot. Lots of FUGLY cars > $45,000 that look like crap to most around them AND drive bad (Hummer comes to mind). I think looks are pretty subjective and appearance doesn't sway me. I've always been a function over form sort of person. FWIW, I think Lamborghini make some of the fugliest cars on the planet. I've told they perform fairly well.

Face it, the 1730 will be a smoking machine. It doesn't look great to everyone, but it will perform no matter what people try and speculate about. Yeah, I think it's fugly, but I also thought that about the 1710 and it's predecessors as well.

And to answer your questions about the M90, I wasn't even aware that the M90 was a wolf in sheep's clothing (and same form factor as 1710 and 9300) until AFTER I got my 1710. I had some cognitive dissonance about the 1710 purchase a few days after I placed the order because I found out about the M90. The reason I went the route I did is that I loved my 9300 and the 1710 was the only laptop in that form factor that Dell still carried (once again, I never looked at the Precision line before I read about them on this site). I was actually looking at Vostro 1700 (or whatever it's called) and didn't like the form factor at all and it's spec'd poorly.

I wouldn't have got an M90 anyhow because I like the glossy screen (having used one for almost 3 years on the 9300). I ordered one for my boss a few days after my 1710 arrived. It's a sweet machine and looks better than the 1710 any day if that's how you judge a laptop. I much prefer the glossy screen to the matte finish but I like the overall look of the M90 much more. Definitely not a poseur piece. I would have scored a M90 in a heartbeat if it had the same screen as the 1710 and 9300. I set up the M90 is it's VERY fast and I don't game so the marginal decrease in performance was not a determining factor.

The 1730 will be a great machine, regardless of the tacky appearance. In all likelihood, those people whining about the appearance will love it to death once they actually use it. I love the 1710's speed as it stands. Best PC I've ever used. Hard to fathom that the 1730 will be even quicker.

Sorry, it's a term they used to throw around a LOT when I was in business school and it's used in marketing a lot. It's the stress people feel AFTER they buy something, thinking they should have spent the money elsewhere or on something else. I have no regrets now, but when I heard about the M90, I had dissonance big time until I saw the screen (which is still nice, just not what I wanted). Then dissonance went down to nothing after that. At one point my boss offered to take the 1710 off my hands and I could have the M90. I didn't quite spec his M90 as nice as my 1710 anyhow. My capital budget didn't allow it.

I tried to like the LEDs on the 1710, I really did. I'd try them out for a day (including the touch pad), but always went back to Quickset to turn them off. I'm much more low key and always frown at those with a "look at me" attitude to spending. I plan to put on a Green/Red LED combination on for Christmas, though.

Yeah...lots of low quality information... but once it is actually released the threads will collapse like a quantum wave packet that has the misfortune to be observed.

Umm, what? What you are describing i called Buyer's Remorse. Cognitive Dissonance does not equal Buyer's Remorse. I think you spent too much time drinking at school & not enough time studying psychology.
