Complete Care i9100 to Dell 1520

Thread Starter
My trusty laptop of a couple of years bit the dust and Dell's Complete Care replaced it with a Dell 1520. I have a couple of questions...
  1. I used to have the ATI Radeon Pro 9800+ in it. The new 1520 has the integrated graphics. I know that sucks. I've requested consideration for a new graphics controller from Dell. If they don't give me one through support, how can I order the 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT? I can't find a Dell part number or a listing of it on the website at all!
  2. The 1520 has a Core 2 Duo T7300 processor (2.0 Ghz). My old machine had an Intel P4 3.2G processor. Will the new processor be as fast as my old one for games?
  3. What's the best strategy to potentially get Dell to be sympathetic that I bought the laptop for a game machine, and the fact that an integrated graphics controller does bumpkiss for games?
Much thanks for the advice and any help that the community can give me!

They don't have to be sympathetic....if the 9800 was the best GPU for the i9100 then they owe you the best for the 1520 =8600gt, just tell them that.

the 2.0 C2D will be faster then the 3.2 P4

Good to hear, MitCity22, that the processor is faster. I'll try a little sugar first, and ask them nicely. I'll escalate if that doesn't work....

Thanks for your response!

Man, it's taking a while for them to respond to my web inquiries. Maybe the phone would work better. Worst come to worst, how can I order a 8600M GT card from them? I'm going to be remote for a couple of weeks, and I'd like the rig to be beefed up by then. Any recommendations or website links? Thanks! Humbert

you can't order the 8600...
ok now let me classify that; I am sure you can get it from dell spare parts but since your laptop has integrated graphics, you cannot put the 8600 card in it; you could only upgrade to the 8600 if you had, say, the 8400.

Arrrgghh. After spending 90 minutes on the phone with 3 different folks with Dell Support, I found this out. They consider the i1520 to be an "upgrade" to the Inspiron 9100 that I had. Well, in CPU power, that is true. But with the graphics card, it's not the case. It's slower than the i9100 with the ATI Radeon Pro 9800 that I had.... I've submitted another ticket to their unresolved technical support web page. I should get a response back within a business day. Ouch. Any strategies on asking them to upgrade me? From what folks have said, this is a perfectly reasonable expectation for me to have. Heck, if it were just a replacement of an onboard video card, I'd be tempted to just order the card myself and replace it, but again, according to atwood7fan, it can't be done. Sigh. Wish me luck, please. -Humbert

You just have to demand that they give you a laptop that is at least equal in graphics power as your i9100, and integrated graphics can't cut it.
exactly, just be persistent and keep escalating the case.....they must give you equal or better specs all around.

Alright guys. Thanks atwood7fan and mitcity22 ... I'll be persistent with escalating levels of tone until I get satisfaction.

Any other tips for me in the escalation project? Any secret phone numbers or code words to utter? Is email/web/chat interaction better than the any other mechanism to communicate on this issue?

This laptop is pretty useless to me as a game machine with the current controller and I'm pretty disappointed.

Thanks!

most people have the best luck with that sort of thing by calling dell, but I've had some luck with the online dell chat; don't ever just send them an email though because then they can just ignore you

A bit OT, but I had no idea that Complete Care was that "Complete". I wish you luck on the graphics front, but wow, a new laptop for one that bit the dust?

Methinks I should've got that with mine....shoot....

You don't have to have complete care to get a system exchanged under warranty. Complete care is really just like Comprehensive and Colission insurance for your laptop. People with the regular warranty are eligible for system replacement just the same as Completecare customers are when it's a conventional warranty claim (not a drop spill or other accidental damage).

One thing you should do is find a website with the specs for that 9800 and another one for the specs for the inergrated card. When you get them on the phone, explain that the 9800 is a WAAAY better card and you can give them the specs from websites to back it up.

When my M170 with a 7800 GTX died, they tried to replace it with a M1710 with the 7900GS. Although it was almost as good, I argued and told them about all of the diffrences between the two cards. The dude even went to the websites that I gave him while on the phone with me to verify it. I ended up getting my 7900 GTX but it took alot of time on the phone with them.

Wow. Nice work. I don't want to bring up a potentially sensitive subject, but just so I know whether I'd be wasting my time or not, but was this with a Dell-India dude or a state-side dude? The service rep that I had was a bit, ummm, coloring too far inside the lines for me. She kept on saying, "Well, you got an upgrade from what you had." And I said, "not for playing games, I didn't." -Humbert

Ok here's another option; explain to them that the card you had had dedicated 256mb of memory and the card you got doesn't have ANY dedicated memory; they seem to understand that (which is why e1705 7900gs customers end up getting stuck with x1400s or 8600gts). You didn't get anything even close to what you had. Anyone that tells you different you should ask to talk to their supervisor and keep getting it escalated.

I didn't even think of that tack, but it makes sense. Yes, my old card had 256MB of dedicated video memory. The integrated control, zippo. I'll try that and keep the community here apprised. -Humbert

me too, and it took months to do, just be angry about the downgrade. it doesn't matter if everything is better or not, with an integrated gpu, it is a downgrade, it takes a long time to get it through to a dell rep, i had to call once or twice a week, send them comparisons between the two gpu's, and jump through all kinds of hoops. in the end i got whats in my sig, it was allot of work but at the time i didnt have a job... now the battery om my 6000d melted and blew up, but i haven't done anything yet because i know it will take too much time... suppose i could do it now...

good luck

You are entitled to equal or better replacements in all catagories of your laptop replacement as per the agreement with Dell and complete care..they cannot give you integraded graphics to replace your older card...all parts and I mean ALL PARTS of the laptop must be equal or better PERIOD!!!!!Demand to speak to a supervisor if they continue to stonewall....I had to escalate my issue when they tried to give me a X1300 instead of a X1400 on my replacement E1505 with complete care, they caved and sent out a rep to install the replacement card...Just be firm and demand what you payed for with complete care....

this is a bit off topic but i have a question for you. my i6000d blew up (it had some kind of overheating where the battery contacts the mobo and it melted about a 2 inch circle in the bottom!) and i am supposed to get a replacement soon, but i don't know what they are sending me yet. i have stressed that i cant accept any integrated graphics. just wondering what your situation is and how long it took you to resolve everything
thanx

Sorry for the delay in responding been away for a while...In my case my old 8600 Inspiron was having Motherboard as well as overheating issues and after 2 botched repair attempts Dell agreed to replace it...Thats when the trouble started, I was assured of a replacement within 14 days..after the deadline came and went Dell assured me one was coming, after even further delay they claimed my replacement had been cancelled and I would have to wait another 14 days for one to be processed, angry I spoke to a rep who kept me on the line while she spoke to a supervisor about my problems, the supervisor was upset at the rep for bringing this problem to her department and proceeded to chew her out , at this point the rep informed her I was on the line and was listening to the whole conversation, it got quiet and tense very quickly to say the least, after once again explaining the issue to the supervisor I was told all she could do was reorder and I would have to wait the normal 14 days...WRONG ANSWER!!! I exploded which is a rare thing for me to do, after a heated exchange I demanded a replacement notebook be shipped and shown as shipped on my account no later than the next day or I would contact the corporate office directly on the whole affair, the next day my E1505 showed up on the website as shipped and I got it the next day, everything was a upgrade except the video card, I contacted them again and told them of the downgrade and they sent a rep out to replace it the next day....My E1505 has worked perfectly since day 1....Dell has been pretty good most of the time but when they screw up it can become quite a nightmare......You just have to be firm.....
