Inspiron 700m: Want Windows Server 2003 on it without disabling ACPI?

Has anyone managed to install Windows Server 2003 successfully on the 700m WITHOUT disabling ACPI (by pressing F7 at installation)? I tried install Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2 from MSDN, but it failed every time at about 34% complete. It was at the installing drivers part.

I just like the 2003 better than XP. Believe it or not, the Server 2003 is much faster than XP regardless of what you have at start-up.

If time permits, I will try Windows Server 2008 Beta 3 and see what happens. It's possible I will try 2003 before that with the Intel 2200BG wifi and the modem removed. That is a shot in the dark really. Can anyone try that and report the results here? I wonder if any engineer can tell us 700m users why that is currently (and will most likely never) not possible to install Server 2003 without disabling ACPI. Even my 6-year-old laptop brick runs it perfectly fine.

Successfully Installed on Dell 700m with full ACPI support

I have successfully installed Windows Server 2003 on the Dell Inspiron 700m without disabling ACPI. As anyone who has tried it before, the installation freezes at about 34% while installing drivers. The solution involves integrating the drivers into the original Windows Server 2003.

Disclaimer: I am not liable for anything as a result of using this instruction. You assume all risk. Please make sure you are using the SAME devices as I do.

You will need the following tools:
1. nLite v1.4 RC2
2. Rapidshare Dell Inspiron 700m Drivers for Windows Server 2003

The zip file contains all the drivers extracted and files that are unnecessary are removed. The drivers are latest as of today or close enough. The driver for SD Card reader supports reading 2GB+ cards. If you want, you can download these individually from Dell support.

NOTE: nLite gave errors while parsing the modem drivers so I had to edit the .inf to comply with the errors.

Steps to integrate drivers (from memory since nLite not installed currently):
1. Install nLite from above.
2. Once installed, insert in your original Windows Server 2003 and start nLite.
3. Direct nLite to the CD-ROM (you may have to point it to the folder /i386).
4. Put a check mark next to Driver integration (or something like that).
5. Add all the drivers downloaded from above into the list.
6. You should then be able to integrate the drivers. Make sure to include create ISO image.

NOTE: You may also choose to integrate SP2 and Internet Explorer 7 (recommended). You DO NOT need to integrate Windows Media Player 10 since it's included already in SP2. Your mileage will vary. Please let me know if it works for 'ya.

Tested on the following specs:
Dell Inspiron 700m with 1.5 GB RAM
Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 [should work with Enterprise] + SP2 + IE7 Integrated

Ethernet NIC --> Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller
56K Modem --> Conexant D480 MDC V.9x
Graphics --> Intel 855GM
Wireless --> Intel 2200BG
PCMCIA and Flash Memory Device --> Texas Inst. PCIxx20 Integrated FlashMedia Cont.
Audio --> SigmaTel C-Major Audio

I got it!

For those who already have the non-ACPI HAL installed, here's how you can enable the ACPI without destroying your existing installation!

1. Boot up with the installation CD
2. When prompted for F6......... Press F5
3. Select - Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC
4. Proceed to install the OS over the existing one without formating

This step bypasses the HAL detection and forces the installation of ACPI HAL for single processor on single motherboard. It may work for fresh install yet but I have not tried it. Please post if you've successfully made the attempt!
