its a hit/miss error with Vista.

Apparently Microsoft is working on a solution. But the only thing i can tell you is sit back and wait for a patch.

People are having similar problems with other aps

I'm sorry mate! If I were you I'd call EAgames and Alienware looking for hope. No doubt AW will push you off to EAgames. When I couldn't install aol on my old AW rig, they were simply like "well, it's your problem, have fun with AOL support. Oh, by the way, call us and let us know of the solution"

Did you ever solve this problem?

I hadn't, however it's simply Vista I think. Now that I'm dual booting XP and Vista, on XP it runs perfectly fine Thanks for the concern though!

Who says this is Microsoft's fault?

Funny how people are so fast to blame them for every problem they encounter. A few thoughts...

- Nvidia has had ongoing issues with Vista and their DX10 cards ever since Vista was released.

- Dice did not make BF2142 compatible with Vista, nor have they even bothered to. That's why it only says "XP" on the retail box.

The Vista source code was in development for over 3 years. Nvidia knew the specs. ATI knew the specs. Dice knew the specs. EA knew the specs. In fact, every single vendor and developer knew the specs.

I play BF2142 quite extensively on Vista using both ATI and Nvidia video cards. The ATI card (X1900 Pro) works perfectly in BF2142 without a single problem, whereas the Nvidia card (8800GTS like yours) does exactly what you describe.

Some vendors did their homework and were ready for Vista's release. Some were not. Nvidia and Dice were NOT...and if you expected all of your games to work perfectly with Vista then obviously you haven't been using Microsoft Windows for very long. This has been the norm for every Microsoft OS since the beginning of time.

Sorry to flame you, but this is the reality of the situation. It's not Microsoft's job to fix every developer's drivers and programs for them and it always takes a good year or more for any Microsoft OS to work 100% with games.

By the way, both World in Conflict and Bioshock run perfectly on Vista with my 8800 GTS. Weird, huh?

Alright, I don't really care who the finger should be pointed at, but windows vista has been a PAIN in the ass for me ever since installation. I don't think all of that is to be blamed on Nvidia.

I hear ya and I agree that Vista is a pain in the ass. I sometimes even get blue screens of death (BSOD) when I play BF2142 with the 8800. I feel your pain, trust me.

But then I play WIC and Bioshock and they both run perfectly on Vista with the 8800. No BSODs, no disconnects, no problems whatsoever. It just leads me to believe that EA and Dice are too frickin cheap to patch up BF2142 for Vista users. Considering EA and Dice's commitment in keeping the entire BF series so bug-free and non-glitchy (sarcasm) they certainly couldn't be the cause.

Yeah...I really have to agree that EA+Dice SUCK at keeping the BF series bug free. Even after a brand new patch comes out, bugs are still constantly present and the game is not optimized much at all. At the moment I'm actually trying my best to find a new game to replace it so that I don't have to be pissed off by it all the time
