VGA and DVI

Hi,

I should be getting a new Dell computer with a 256MB nVidia™ GeForce 8600GT graphics card soon, and was wandering if I could connect my 19" Acer that only has a VGA connector to this computer with that graphics card.

Dell says "Dell Value Flat Panel monitors are VGA / Analogue monitors. Dell Ultrasharp Flat Panel monitors are DVI / Digital monitors." I selected a Dell Value panel monitor with the 256MB nVidia™ GeForce 8600GT graphics card and it said it was all compatible.

Thanks

Yes you can. It should come with a small DVI to VGA adapter.

ok, but remember I want the graphics card built in that comes with the computer, not to buy the card separately.

Still they should give you one. If not it will be 5£ to pick one up.

Those adapters have pretty much become the norm for new systems, even the OEM machines carry them these days. worst case you can find them in most electronics stores.

Also, you'll get one. With my last desktop from Dell which was even a while ago when DVI wasn't the norm, they included one

That adapter in the picture you posted won't come with the system. The 8600GT you're getting whill have two ports on the DBracket (Possibly dual DVI, but more than likely you'll get a DB15 and DVI). That adatper you see pictured is for the low end cards like the X1300 which use a half-height PCB and have only a single DVI Port (or a special High Density video port).

You will most likely have to buy an adapter. Dell typically doesn't ship the DVI-I to DB-15 adapter that comes with most off the shelf cards.

oh, no, how sure are you? Would I still be able to use the computer without a adapter? I saw a VGA slot for a monitor higher up in the computer (not where the graphics card should be) And, would this make a difference? there's a VGA out slot there.

and,

But, I can use ANY VGA connector on the new computer, (even higher up near the power cord) and all the difference will be the resolution, and colour and quality?

please, I really need an answer today.

dude, if your monitor only supports VGA, THEN USE THE VGA slot, no point in doing a conversion.

if the video card looks like that picture you will not need a dongle at all

if it has vga, and dvi output, dont worry, connect it to what yer lcd uses, dvi or vga

right, I have the computer now, and Dell DID provide a DVI adapter. The card I have has two DVI ports, and one for a TV. no VGA.

I am now using my computer, and it is great, the graphics are really good. Anyone want a picture?
