hi,
first off, a little information....i'm a graphic designer/amateur vj in india....looking for a laptop.
my choices are basically limited by availability in india...
have narrowed down my choice to either the HP dv9000series or asus G2/G1. The HP is pretty easily available, but i'm not sure how much i can customize it...does anyone know what kind a mods i can do to it, in terms of HDD,graphic card....
found out i can order the G2/G1 here, but it'll take a month to get it(which i'm fine with)...
but here's my main question......which one??
really wanna get the asus, but most reviews say it's average in graphics abilities...but the reviews are being done by gamers....i intend using it for photoshop/illustrator/after effects/resolume......
The HP dosen't seem like a really hard core desktop replacement...which is the reason i'm buying this laptop....
can anyone help?
thanks in advance

it would help if u give out the FULL specs of the systems u r looking at. The model says NOTHING from one country to another. Best thing would be if u customize them online with the manufacturers, then u would know what r the offering choices and adjust ur pocket book accordingly

asus was my choice too....until i met a friend last nite who use to deal in computer hardware here and he told me that asus's service is really bad here..
i'm also wondering whether it's the right machine to deal with the climate here(i live in india) even though most of my time i'm at work...vjing gigs are mostly mostly outdoor....
this guy was also talking about toshiba machines....but i don't know too much about them...
so gonna do some more looking around...any other suggestions atre welcome...
thanks..

if you are going to listen to every guy in India, then you will get bad apples from every manufacturer.

When it comes down to laptops, the important thing is all laptop parts are made in the same factory, the same conditions and tested equally.
All manufacturers do is buy those parts, put it in a plastic case and slap a "ASUS" sticker on it...and there you go.

Buy with what you are comfortable with, not what your friend's brother's sister's boyfriends' dad bought 4 years ago and it didn't work after 2 days and now he says that all laptops from that company is garbage.

I would go with Toshiba just because their Thinkpad series is one of the most durable and quality made laptops known to a mankind.

not true in this case. Asus designs and physically manufactures the chassis, motherboards, and video cards (at least) on their notebooks in their factories in Taiwan & China. And although they include a global warranty with each notebook, their service centers vary around the globe. From what I've heard (and experienced, at least in the US), they're pretty good in eastern Asia and North America and not as good in Europe. I haven't heard much about India. Also, just an FYI: Lenovo manufactures Thinkpads, and they're licensed by IBM, NOT Toshiba.

really frustrated by the lack of good customizable desktop replacement notebooks available in india....or rather the lack of support for them in inda, even if i do import one in....
my budget is around $2500, can go higher, but would rather not.

The Dell M4300 is working out to $3200 here.(C2D 2.2Ghz/120 GB 7200 RAM/2 GB/ quadro FX 512(only 256 is dedicated)
would rather not spend that much.
the dell inspiron 1720 is running me $2000 cofigured the way i like it.
i saw the hp 8000. but i dont think it's available anymore here.
still considering the asus G1S it's working out to $2200( 2 years onsite warranty- 24 hrs comes along with the cost of the machine)
so gonna have to decide in the next week, so that i can order it. we're doing a vjing gig in delhi 1st week off Oct. want to use it there, coz that's the beginning of a couple of gigs that we'll be travelling out of bombay for...
so still looking ...

I would take the Asus because of the Intel processor. Intel makes the better mobile processor right now. They have better battery life and run cooler then AMD. No AMD will be releasing a new processor in 2008 but so will Intel.
