Vista Security

Hello all,

My first post here. I just bought a Toshiba Satellite x205-29359 . Vista Ultimate.

My current PC OS is XP Home Edition. A couple years ago, I found a great site which walked me through "the right way to install XP".
It took me a couple days to go through the very detailed process, but ever since then, I have not had one pop up, virus, not one system crash or any other problem. It was a complete solution which really worked (and still does) This site did not try to sell anything. All the programs were freeware. http://tweakhound.com/xp/installxp/installXP1.htm

After doing the setup, go directly to "Securing windows XP". http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/security/page_1.htm

The site walked you through all the settings for xp, and what services could be turned off. It also had links to may free programs such as Spybot, Ad-Aware, Spyblaster, Microsoft security baseline analyzer, CCcleaner, etc. and in exactly which order things should be installed.

My question is: Does anyone know of a site which does this same thing for Vista? I am totally new to Vista, and I'd like to get it set up correctly right away, before I put a bunch of programs and files loaded into it. I just checked, and tweakhound does have a page for Vista - http://www.tweakhound.com/vista/index.htm
But does anyone know of a better one before I start using the tweakhound site for vista?

BTW, I was researching getting the optional insurance on the notebook. I looked at Toshiba's plan and several others on the internet. But then I called my insurance company. We have homeowners, auto, umbrella through them. They told me I was insured against theft, damage due to tornado, fire, etc, but not for damage or loss due to my own fault. So they put a rider on my policy for replacement value of the notebook if anything happened due to my fault. (spillage, dropping, losing it, etc) It's only $26/year, which is 1/4 to 1/8 the prices I was getting online, so I would highly recommend going this route instead of purchasing laptop insurance online. FYI

Thanks,

Eddie

other than turning off the nagging uac, indexing and some extra startup processes that comes with the laptop, i personally would leave vista as is.
. add more ram, if u can
. get some free virus scanner (avg, avast r my personal choices for vista)
. run ad-aware once in a while
. cCleaner is good for clean up
. firefox is my browser choice under vista
. vista codec packs for video
. vlc is my video player of choice

most of the tweaks out there for vista are still based on xp days, do not hurt but do not help either

vista is still evolving, make no sense to tweak ,

cheers ...

Security in Vista is pretty good. not perfect but a really good system. once you get the computer set up, and once you are done installing and un installing progs and such, you wont see much of UAC anymore, so I'd leave it on. its a good feature security wise. anyhow, give it a try and see if you like it.
