No more gaming for me?

ok, i am not a "hardcore gamer" but i do enjoy occasionally playing battlefield 2 when i am bored or on a rainy day.

Now, I am going to college and i need a laptop (ive never owned one) and i think being at college i might play bf2 more than i do at home.

so heres the problem: I want a small notebook thats under 15" that can still handle bf2 nicely. I have a $2,000 budget but i'd like it to be less than that if possible. Also, i hate vista and i want XP. I was looking at the Asus G1 but it comes with vista, and its a 15.4" I was this laptop to last me throughout college.

I plan to hook my laptop up to a external monitor in my dorm/apartment so the small screen size doesn't really matter to me. I want it to be small and light so i can carry it around easily and go to class with it.

heres another problem, im not too computer knowledgable and i barely know how to download drivers without assistance. so searching around for the "best" laptops isn't coming easy to me at all.

can someone help me out? or is the G1 really my best bet.

No the Dell Vostro 1500 can have the same specs but it is more reserved....all black w/ a Dell logo. Like I told you either 15" and last for 3-4 years or 14" and you'll upgrade when new DX10 games only come out.

For 14" with a nVidia 8600GT, you have 2 choices I know of:

1. Asus F8s - will be released in September/October (may be a time issue for you).
2. Zepto 6224/6324 - available now, but has to be imported from Europe (they have done so in the past and can help you do that)

The benefits are the size (14" screen, light weight) and a DX10 card. However, I have neither of these laptops. There are people who have posted Zepto benchmarks and reviews, which you can find at http://www.notebookreview.com/ (check the reviews database and the Zepto forum) and http://www.notebookcheck.net/Zepto-Z...4W.4323.0.html.

The Asus V2s is just starting to ship out, and has the 8600GS card. It's got very good specs, a 14" screen and is ~$1,750. Get the extended warranty, and you are covered for 3 years for under $2,000. However, it is definitely more of a business laptop, and the 8600GS is very underpowered compared to the 8600GT.

Regards,

Z.

thanks for the reply, do you know a reputable site where i can pre-order this machine? i see that milestonepc & excaliberpc have them for pre-order. also, i am wondering if the specs they posted on their sites are the official specs that are going to come with the computer before i hand my money to someone.

pre-order specs are not necessarily official specs.

For your budget a Latitude D830 would play BF2 no problem. I play it and 2142 on my D820 at LAN parties.

Not yet. Look for end of November / beginning of December. Actually, it's been that way since July for the F8s, so I guess it's less of a surprise now.
