xps 1710 constant hard drive usage

Thread Starter
I just got my new xps 1710 and I am having a problem where the hard drive is constantly under use making it very hard to do anything.

I am having lots of problmes tracking it down. In the performance logs in the event viewer I have the TDI Translation driver "taking longer to initialize resulting in a performance degradation"

same with:
vsmon.exe (zone alarm)
multimedia class scheduler service
audioendpointbuilder
Local Security Authority Process
scanningProcess.exe (zone alarm)
windows audio service

This is really causing a problem and if anyone knows how to fix this, please help.

indexing, vista (if) building up performance table?, defragger in background, av/malware scanner, ...

if vista, i recommend not using 3rd party firewall and get free virus scan like avg or avast

review ur startup processes and services

cheers ...

The disk defragmenter doesn't run in the background, but on a scheduled defrag weekly at 2am. The indexer just reports indexing speed reduced due to use activity, as far as I know zonealarm doesnt do a virus/spyware scan on boot, if it does then I cant find any options to stop it.

But all this hard drive activity does stop after the computers been on for something like 3 hours, Ive just been unable to track it down. I have played around with the startup options, don't see anything in the services. Im knida wondering now, I'm on a school network, and I'm wondering, would it try and scan all the computers online and all that stuff, and could that cause a huge amount of hard drive use?

-edit- Checked the network by disconnecting the network, not the issue

To disable virus/spyware scanning on ZA just right click the ZA icon & restore the control panel, go to the AV/spyware tab & turn it off.

If it does continue the most likey culprit is the Vista indexing service, which can be disabled through services (this is the most likey reason for your HDD usage)

The simplist way is to disable the Windows Search service. Run Services (just type “Services” at the Start Search bar), right click on the Windows Search service and select “Properties”. Then choose “Disabled” for the start type. Afterwards, you have to stop this service by right clicking on it and selecting “Stop”.
