Should I buy a laptop now or just wait?

Thread Starter
All this DirectX 10 nonsense has me very confused as to what I should be looking for in a laptop currently. Obviously I'm rather ignorant of computer tech.

At the moment this is what I'm looking for:
  • $2000-$2500 price range (the maximum price range increases as time goes on maxing at about $3000 dollars around Christmas)
  • 2 gigs of ram
  • Intel Core Duo whatever
  • A graphics card that can play pretty much anything currently out at high-max settings and that could last me a while (if it could play Crysis at med-low settings I'd be more than satisfied)
Now then, besides the fact that I'd have a little extra spending money, is there any reason why I should hold off buying a gaming laptop or will I probably end up buying what I'm currently looking at (which is currently some Alienware or Dell nonsense)? Do you guys think prices will go down or that I could get some nice deals come closer to the holidays?

Side-note, notebooks that caught my eye:

http://www.alienware.com/product_det...de=SKU-DEFAULT
http://www.dell.com/content/products...=19&l=en&s=dhs

Though to be honest the Dell and Alienware seem way too expensive while the Asus seems to have a lot of what the other two have for a much lower price. Any other suggestions are welcome.

I would say you should wait until say the M1730 comes out with the 8800M card so that you're assured to be able to run absolutely anything out there at good frame rates

Basically, I agree with pdonket (although I haven't heard anything about any rumored models that may have a mobile 8800). Since the only high-end graphics cards in notebooks currently do not support DirectX 10 and newer high-end mobile graphics cards are expected to be released sometime within the next several months, I'd wait for the newer cards.

Agree also, wait til that 8800 comes out!

Dell or alienware nonsense, eh? I hope you realize that Dell and Alienware give you a better Graphic card, 17 inches, 1080p resolution screen, blu-ray, and multi-graphic card configuration. Plus the 8800 will be more expensive if you want it. I have a 7950 GTX Go and I can only handle medium-low settings for Crysis! And the graphic card on Asus is not so good and will give you horrible gameplay compared to AW or Dell. Your price range is good - keep it! But stick with either Dell or Alienware. AW is especially releasing a new laptop. So wait!

I agree with ihatedesktops. The new Alienware 15 and 17" that are coming out on the 19th I believe are going to be awesome. There's quite a bit of discussion about them in the Alienware Notebook section you might check it out. I haven't had an alienware before so hope it all goes well.
