compaq b1916tu ram issues

Thread Starter
hi there i have recently purchased a compaq b1916tu laptop everything works fine until i go to upgraded the ram from 1gig to 2gig but now the laptop "struggles" to start up. The power flashes telling me it is starting up then the laptop shuts off. (btw i have not exceeded the ram limit of 2gigs and the ram itself is not faulty) so the question is whats happening?

the thing is that in the other slot im using the same ram

if removing the new ram module returns to normal functionality, then it is incompatibility or bad module. u can also test the new module by just using it on its own

thanks for the info i am currently running the supposedly dodgy ram (1gig) by itself and it is running fine but the problem starts when i add another 1gig (same brand). However everything is fine when i add a 512mb of ram.

ahhh, the mystery of being able of support "max" ram. check ur specs again, might need a bios update

a good reference thread in the ram upgrade subject

ok my bios is Phoenix F.05,9/29/2006 something (intel 965gm chipset) and i upgraded it to F.15 now the comp starts on 2048MB but now i have to press the power button atleast 8 for it to turn on correctly, first 8 or so time i press it only the leds goes on and nothing else. And the specs is kind of vague :@ it says 2gig but my total ram is 2048MB does this mean the ram must be exactly 2gigs or could it be a typo?

a long period of rest between bios update. this is a wise decision, then one can be sure that the bios version has been fully tested

i plead "typo" - load cpuZ and see what it says, and ur system properties? computer properties (ACPI compliant?) cheers ...

ok i just ran cpuZ wat am i suppose to be looking anything in particular? and also cpuZ says 2048MB. Do you want me to show the cpuZ.txt?
good, that means that ur system recognises all installed ram (the other one is typo :-))
nah, keep the txt for reference. it is a good tool to get a quick overview on the system

ok wat do i do now about the constantly of pressing the power button, could it be a power problem or something else?
so let me understand, u have to press the power button 8 or more times before the laptop start (?)

on battery alone? on power adapter alone? on both together?

cheers ...

i tried it battery alone, power alone and even with both together. It still requires atleast 8 times even more for the laptop to boot up correctly. Oh btw thanks for helping me out greatly appreciated .

the only suspicion i have is that the power bezel, where the power button locates, is faulty. on some laptops u have to replace the whole bezel, on some there is a whatchamacal power stripe/board that u can easily replace

appreciate the appreciation, it feels nice when one is lucky with the inputs - enjoy the forum

wait, i take it back. the problem occurs with new ram installation. i would try to reseat the modules first. as with bios update, verify ur computer properties, ide controller properties since it exists the possibility that it has reset many values

cheers ...

ok not to sound like a complete noob what do u mean by ide controllers if the values has been reset wat do i do to restore it to normal settings
post #17 of 23
u want to see that ide controller is set to support DMA when available (primary and secondary when possible)

cheers ...

ok both ide controllers are set to "DMA when available". When i read this post i went to turn off my laptop and change from 1.5gigs (my safe "config") to 2gigs of ram and accidentally discovered that when the laptop is warmed up it turns one with one push of the power button but when i leave the laptop for a couple of hours it requires at least 8 times to properly boot up the laptop??
blah, loose connection somewhere then, well, like i said, i would look into the power bezel area next

cheers ...
