8790 fan noise

The 8790 fan goes through a cycle when changing speeds where you hear a 1-2 second rpm roar to get to the speed it wants. Sager is aware of this and is working on a new firmware to smooth out the transition so you don't notice the fan speed burst as much. It's not a huge issue to most, but I can totally understand some people not wanting that noise spike if it doesn't need to be there.

Yay! Good to know that they are listening to their customers.
The WHIRRRRRrrrrr startup is kind of distracting... not a deal-breaker but if it could go away, my enjoyment of the 8790 would increase.

I also would like the fan noise to be either gone or just not so loud.
I am currently writing this in my school's library constantly looking over my shoulder whenever the fan goes on. I know it must be annoying at least one person.
Yep, and that one person is you. Maybe others too, though I doubt it.
I personally like what works...doesnt annoy me at all...

i hope the firmware fixes the problem but I am not gonna mess with it

If it were on for extended amounts of time, it'd bother me, but as it is, not really noticeable. But then again, I'm not using a public library, either

My 5680 does this same thing ever since I got the keyboard firmware bios update. Is there a simalar fix coming out for the 5680?

Fan speed burst, makes me realize it's a Sag(j)er and I love it!

I'd like them to make a gaming case that's one inch thicker that lets air flow out the left thru exhaust vents. Extra fans that run slowly would be ok.

Any way you guys can make a custom case that does this?

We just received a new firmware we're testing and it will be released once everything checks out and Sager OKs it.

Unfortunately, to fully check the new firmware, we will need to stress the system with some heavy gaming. =)... many may die in this testing.

Many may die, but its for a good cause. Thanks for the update!

Adam hate to open this discussion here, but if Sager can write a thing like this to control fan ramp up speed, could they (would they) write something to give us control over when it is on - like for in my room having it on full all the time to be cool before gaming?

Adam, when I talked to Jake at Sager he told me that my lappy would be coming out of the next lot arriving from Taiwon on Tuesday and that it had a new revision affecting the fans/heat. Is this bios update the revision he was talking about? I must admit I'm getting a little antsy...

If anyone is currently @ their 8790 and wants to test the new firmware, email us. I'll send the zip file for you to try it out and help us look for any issues in regular use and gaming fan control/noise level. You will need an external USB floppy drive to flash it.

Too bad that this wasn't out last week. I'd have been the first one to take you up on the offer.

Is this the Version 1.0.3 BIOS? The machine I returned had the Version 1.0.1 BIOS. Sager did not want me to try this verion of the BIOS that was available @ EUROCOM for fear that it may not work and muck something else up.

I would test it but I do not have a floppy at all. I have heard of people making a boot cd and it working like that...is there any way to do it without a floppy?

Nevermind, I found a USB floppy drive. I will email you Adam.

The way this new software works is it takes a much less aggressive approach and is MUCH quieter with normal use. When you want to game, you hit "FN+F10" and it kicks the fans on @ a constant controlled high speed that doesn't interfere with sound output and smooth gameplay. Then you hit FN+F10 again to set it back down and to auto fan adjust.

He could have been referring to this update in anticipation of it becoming available.

Guess the same would apply if you know that you are going to do something that will "max out" the machine. Video editing etc... Think that it is a sweet solution.
