Clueless attempt by n00b to use Gentoo 2007

Well, I'm having a Linux problem which, at least for now, isn't solely the screen resolution.

Just to see if it were possible (for me, that is), I've been attempting to try out Gentoo 2007 with a Live CD - the Gentoo 2006 disc works just fine, except for the resolution, of course . 2007 absolutely refuses to run and I've tried on two formerly Windows machines, each of which now has Ubuntu installed. 2007 says that the X Server isn't installed and so will not start.

FWIW: I've made two Live CD's using two different machines with the same end result. Also made the 2006 CD which works. I know that I could simply continue with the older version, but I'm too dumb to do something so damn easy.

What am I doing wrong, and/or what should I be doing differently with 2007?

Edit: 2007 works on a friend's Vista laptop, except that it won't connect to the Internet even when using ethernet, though connecting the machine using Vista works just fine.

did you use the CD or the DVD? I'm just curious, cuz I'm gonna try, and figured I might as well use the same one.

as to your problem, I'm afraid I dont know, but I'm sure someone here does.

hmm weird.... havent tried the livecds recently tho (minimal cd install ftw ).

you trying to install it on your emachines? last time i tried running a livecd was on my emachines (before I had to replace the motherboard) and it always hardlocked

here is the thing about gentoo. don't use the gnome livecd because it fails as a livecd (compared to PCLOS or even Ubuntu) and is even worse as an installer (the GTK installer is broken...badly). So the only way to use gentoo is to install it through minimal install cd Its also the most hardcore way

Was only attempting to try out the OS from the Live CD, not actually install it. Thought there might be a big difference between the 2006 version (which works on every PC I've tried), and the 2007 version. Probably isn't, but now I'm curious as to what's going on, and a bit frustrated and will keep trying (at least for a while ) to make 2007 work.

Actually have two cheapo eMachines now, conda. The one I asked you about a few days ago wouldn't work following your suggestions, until after I bought a new one.

well my point is their livecd is a fairly infantile beast (was only introduced in 2006 IIRC, or maybe late 2005), and it isnt really very stable. the configuration of 2007 version may just have problems with your hardware configurations

Sounds more like a few people I know than a Live CD.

Of course the damn thing has problems with my hardware configurations! I'll give it another shot. If it still won't work I'll read the Wiki again and see what happens.

@Louis: You might want to read this before using 2007 LiveCD. Seems that either the minimal CD or 2006.1 version would probably be a better choice, though people seem to be having problems with those as well.

If I were smart, I'd just pack it in and be happy that I finally got the proper screen resolution for Ubuntu.

wow. lots of people having problems. I might try it on my test box, but I'm keepin' that thing away from my laptop. I dont need no corrupted partition table. I've done that, it's a royal P.I.T.A. - I'll pass thanks.

Personally I don't reccomend using the LiveCD, never been impressed from what i Have heard on it. With Gentoo either go for the install, or don't do it Though you might have better luck, with I believe it is Sabayon, which is a gentoo based distro that might have a Live CD that would work better. Not sure as I haven't looked at it in a fair while now.

Good luck, Louis.

Thanks for the comment, seablade. I've already used Sabayon but didn't really like it (and even got it to work with the correct screen resolution - which wasn't 1920x1600)

Have lots of time, and don't really need the machine which may, someday in the distant future, actually have Gentoo installed; I'll give it a shot. If I blow the whole mess to Hell, nothing will really be lost but time and effort. Just a few days ago I thought the machine itself was dead. Thanks, to conda, it's back to life - at least for the time being.
