8886 and Windows XP drivers

After a fresh install of Windows XP, if you go to the device manager (right click my computer, go to properties, click the hardware tab, then click "device manager") here is what you will find:

Everywhere you see a "!" or a "?" means the device has driver issues more than likely. This happens because many of the devices are released after Windows XP was released and Windows XP doesn't recognize it to automatically install a driver when the OS is loaded.

Install the drivers I've listed in order as I say to do them =)

Here's the 2 CDs that hold all the drivers you will need for your 8886:

We'll start off with putting in the CD on top that says "Notebook Computer".

CHIPSET DRIVERS
Click "My Computer" and click the CD drive (probably Drive E). Click Drivers, inf_update, infinst_autol.exe and it will then go through setup. During setup, you will need to click Next-Yes-Next. When it's done click "Finish".

AUDIO
Click "My Computer" and click the CD drive (probably Drive E). Click Drivers, Audio, Setup.exe and it will go through setup. During setup you will need to click next once and when it's done click "Finish" and it will reboot the system. When it reboots go to your control panel (start/settings/control panel) and click "Sounds and Audio Devices". Click the "Audio" tab and then click "Advanced". Select from the pull down menu "5.1 Surround Speakers", click "apply" and then OK, and OK again to close and save it.

MODEM
Click "My Computer" and click the CD drive (probably Drive E). Click Drivers, Modem, XP, then click Setup.exe. It will then go through setup. During setup you will need to click Next and "Continue Anyway" when it pops up the alert saying the software hasn't been approved by Windows. When it's done click "Finish".

LAN
Click "My Computer" and click the CD drive (probably Drive E). Click Drivers, LAN, Setup.exe and it will go through Setup. During setup you will need to click "next" and when it's done click "Finish".

VIDEO
Click "My Computer" and click the CD drive (probably Drive E). Click Drivers, VGA, Setup.exe and it will go through setup. During setup you will need to click Next, Yes, Express. When it's done click "Finish" and your computer will reboot. When it boots back up right click your desktop background and go to properties. Click the "Settings" tab then click "Advanced". Click the "Direct3D" tab and uncheck "Wait for Vertial Sync". Click "apply" and then OK to close and save it.

TOUCHPAD
Click "My Computer" and click the CD drive (probably Drive E). Click Drivers, Touchpad, WIN2K_XP, Setup.exe and then it will go through setup. During setup you will need to click next, next, next. Click "COntinue Anyway" if it comes up with an XP warning. When it's done click "Finish" and your computer will reboot.

SONY MEMORY STICK PORT
This one you have to install from the Device Manager.
Right click "My Computer" go to "Properties" click the hardware tab, then click "device manager". Look for "Other Devices" and if there's a "+" next to it, click it to expand it's sub catagories. Under it there should be listed "Unknown Device". Right click "unknown Device" and click "Update Driver", click "Install from a list or specific location". Uncheck "Search Removable Media" and select "Include This Location in the Search". Delect what is in the box below it and type in exactly:
D:\Drivers\MS\WINXP
Then click OK... You can also Browse for the location.
You will have to click Next and when it's done click "Finish".
Now, when you click "My Computer" you will see the memory stick icon as a drive.

HOT KEY
Click "My Computer" and click the CD drive (probably Drive E). Click Drivers, APKEY, CNK001.exe and it will go through setup. During setup you will need to click next and when it's done click "Finish" and it will reboot your computer.

At this point your device manager should look like this:

All that remains is the USB and TV tuner devices.

USB 2.0
Click "My Computer" and click the CD drive (probably Drive E). Click Drivers, USB20, Setup.exe and it will go through setup. During setup you will need to click Yes, Next, Next, Yes, OK. Then you must click the "Print to File" icon as shown in the picture below:

Another window will pop up and you just click "OK" and it will finish the install. When it's done click "Finish" and your computer will reboot. I don't have any USB2.0 devices to test it out to verify so someone let me know if you have a problem.

TV TUNER

Now you should be down to just the TV devices:

You will need to remove the CD and put the other on pictured above labeled "TV Studio".

These last 2 I chose to install from the Device Manager also.
Right click "My Computer" go to "Properties" click the hardware tab, then click "device manager". Right click "Multimedia Controller listed under "Other Devices" and click "Update Driver". Select the option "Install the software automatically",

next next and it will go through the setup after finding the Driver on the CD by itself.

Then do the same thing for "Multimedia Video Controller" in the device manager. This time when it finds the drivers it will make a list for you. I chose the 1st 5.2.9.0 drivers on the list as you see below:

After that, your device manager should be free from any "!" or "?" and all devices installed properly. You will of course have to put the CDRW, DVD, and rest of the TV program software on for user interface. Also, you can install the Mail icon on the main CD under Drivers\E-Mail LED\Setup.exe to configure the LED to light up under the LCD when you have mail.

I get a lot of questions from people who have never installed this stuff and only bought it without an OS to save $. Hopefully this will help some of you. I referenced the owners manual as much as possible to keep it along the lines as Sager recommends.

If you can't get the USB drivers to install as I listed and you're sure you did everything correctly and IN ORDER, you can try to do it through the device manager, but shouldn't have to.

What about XP with SP1? I was under the impression that SP1 has USB2 support?

Sorry, I don't have a SP1 XP CD because I bought a huge license pack a while back I use. I'm betting you're right and it will auto install with SP1. I did some surfing on the Microsoft website for the exact drivers to put in the write up, but after a few minutes couldn't find it. Hopefully a member with SP1 can verify this.

SP1 is Service Pack 1. Windows released a whole package of updates for the operating system instead of you having to download each patch as a Windows update *basically*.
XP Home Edition should work the same with USB2.0 and yes, you can play games with XP Pro, most gamers choose XP Pro.

XP Pro for gaming

Any advantage (wrt Gaming) of any OS?? XP or XP Pro?? whats special about XP Pro anyway??

PCTorque, a question for you

After installing SP1, the yellow mark on "Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller" remain yellow, so I have to install the USB2.0 drivers anyway.

PCTorque, a question for you, why your order of fdriver instalation is different of Sager's manual? Its is wrong to use the manual order?? Please tell me, because if so, im going to reinstall XP.

Neither one is wrong, both work fine. The main thing is that you want to install the drivers that affect the most system critical things first so that performance is better for the drivers you install next. Also, some drivers base their settings for optimization upon the capabilities of the computer.... so you want the chipset installed so everythin on the computer runs smoothly together, and from their you install things that span from that. Hope that helps!

Thanks Beebster83

BTW, Anyone knows how to unlock a harddrive on an IBM ThinkPad. The girlfriend of a friend of mine let him in so angry manner that she locks his hd, he is getting really mad. jejejeje
post #10 of 47
Locks his hard drive? Eh? I've never heard of that... like physically by switching a switch or by software...?

She put a password so when he turns on the pc he cant get in.
Dude.. The only way to reset the CMOS password on a locked out thinkpad is to replace the motherboard. I'm not joking. This is one of the security features incorporated into laptops since they have a higher theft rate.

I hope this is his GF, not Ex-GF.
I told him that, and yes right now is his EX, jejejeje
Maybe some more flowers and she tell him the password
post #15 of 47
Are you sure you can't reset the CMOS by removing all forms of power? Like the battery and the CMOS battery? It must be a feature unique to thinkpads if that isn't the case, because most laptops you can just reset the mobo by pressing a button (which is why the best security is one that requires a minidisc for booting :-)) and if that doesn't work you can just remove the cmos battery (aka the bios battery) and it'll reset the bios to factory...

Thanks for that Slipstreaming link. I'm grabbing SP1 now so I make the CD. BTW, if you don't have the boot image file you can grab it here:

www.betaspy.co.uk/xpboot.bin
or
www.webcentar.org/longhorn/uputstvo/Microsoft%20Corporation.img

I haven't tried either yet they're both 2kb in size
post #17 of 47
Ok we are going to open it to try that, but I only had opened Dell before. I will tell you when done. Thank you.

About XP sliptreamin...

Ok, I have tried both method, with xpboot.bin and with mscorp.img extracted from original XP cd and still doesn't work (boot) with my 8886. Both boot fine in my desktop pc. I dont know why
post #19 of 47
Beeb, the password is stored in flash ROM. It's seperate from the CMOS. And every Laptop I've worked on is like that. I've pulled all power sources and discharged the system for 48 hours. It's still locked. Called IBM, HP, and Compaq when I was working on laptops having the same issue. ALL of the OEMs said you need to replace the mobo.

Nandy, when you burned the cd, did you make sure the boot emulation was set to none?
Judas, I use the no emulation option and 4 on numbers of load sectors. The problem is that it boots on my desktop and all others pc where i use the same slipstreaming cd. Maybe is a problem with the firmware of the burner (Toshiba SD-R2312), Im waiting for a new firm to be sure. If you has other sugestion, wellcome. Thanks in advance.

BTW, the girlfriend of my friend accepted to unlocked the thinkpad, he is a happy man again but she is gone anyway.
